Serological Diagnosis of Neosporosis in a Herd of Dairy Cattle in Southern Brazil

Abstract: Neospora caninum-specific antibodies were detected in 60 of 172 (34.8%) dairy cattle by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in a herd from Parana State, Brazil. The seropositive animals included 47 of 126 (37.3%) adult cows, 7 of 29 (24%) heifers (1-2 yr), 4 of 15 (27%) heifers (5 mo-1 yr), and 2 precolostral samples. Data collected over a 9-yr follow-up period revealed that the proportion of pregnancies ending in abortion was 20% (31/154) among ELISA seropositive cows and 8% (15/193) among seronegative … Show more

“…Neosporosis has been described as an important cause of abortion in southern Brazil (CORBELLINI et al, 2001(CORBELLINI et al, , 2002LOCATELLI-DITTRICH et al, 2001). Locatelli-Dittrich et al (2001) reported that the abortion risk in N. caninum-seropositive dairy cows was four times higher than in seronegative dairy cows.…”

“…Locatelli-Dittrich et al (2001) reported that the abortion risk in N. caninum-seropositive dairy cows was four times higher than in seronegative dairy cows. Corbellini et al (2002) used both histopathological and serum sample examination from bovine aborted fetuses, and described a high rate of occurrence of N. caninum as the cause of abortion throughout the state of Rio Grande do Sul.…”

“…However, most of these reports were provisional and not a case controlled study. In PR, samples from a herd collected over a nine-yr follow-up period were analyzed for Neospora infections (LOCATELLI-DITTRICH et al, 2001). They found that the proportion of abortions was 20% and 8%, respectively for the seropositive and seronegative animals.…”

“…Brazilian studies have contributed to the knowledge of distribution of infection in cows (Gennari 2004), its association with cases of abortion (Locatelli-Dittrich et al 2001, Corbellini et al 2002, its risk factors (Melo et al 2001, Guimarães Júnior et al 2004, and the isolation of the parasite (Gondim et al 2001) . However, there is much more to be investigated, since Brazilian territory has a wide climate variation with many different ecosystems, what implicates a great diversity in the breed population according to the geographic areas which could affect the distribution of neosporosis.…”
