Serological detection of plant viruses in their aphid vectors and host plants in Tunisia

Abstract: DAS‐ELISA was used to study the presence of viruses in four aphid species (Aphis gossypii, Aphis craccivora, Myzus persicae and Macrosiphum euphorbiae) and in their host plants potato, capsicum and tomato. Samples were collected in different regions in Tunisia: north, Cap Bon, Sahel, centre and south. A. gossypii and M. persicae carried all the viruses detected: Cucumber mosaic cucumovirus, Tomato aspermy cucumovirus, Tobacco etch potyvirus, Potato Y potyvirus, Alfalfa mosaic alfamovirus and Potato leafroll po… Show more

“…They can cause damage to plants by curling and distorting their leaves, and stunting their shoots. They also cause severe indirect damage as vectors of plant viruses (Kennedy et al 1962;Raboudi et al 2002;Katis et al 2007). However, growers use mostly broad spectrum synthetic insecticides to manage aphids.…”

“…This pest accounts for yield losses ranging from 37 to 90% (Abate et al, 2000;Ampofo and Massomo,2009). They cause impairment directly by sucking cell sap, secrete honeydew resulting in development of sooty mold on leaves and shoots and secondarily as vectors of certain plant viruses (Difonzo et al, 1997;Kennedy et al, 1962;Raboudi et al, 2002).…”

“…In addition to direct injury they can cause plants, aphids are able to transmit more than 200 plant viruses (Blackman and Eastop 2000). Apterous aphids can transmit viruses between adjacent plants and their alate offspring are often responsible for the transmission of viruses from one region to another (Raboudi et al 2002). The ability of aphids to transmit viruses is linked to their feeding exclusively on phloem sap (Sandström et al 2000).…”
