This research was conducted to identify and found the abundance of predatory insect species of S. frugiperda in Sleman and Gunungkidul Regencies, Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia. This research was conducted in June 2021 - March 2022 on corn plantations in Sleman and Gunungkidul Regencies. Determination of the sampling location was determined by stratified random sampling. Corn land used in sampling was determined by purposive. Insect predator caught by using sweeping net and hand picking. The results showed that there are 3 orders, 8 families, and 16 species of insect predators. 3 orders of the insect predators that found in the Sleman and Gunungkidul Regencies were Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, and Hemiptera. Insect predator families that found in Sleman dan Guungkidul Regencies were Coccinellidae, Carabidae, Staphylinidae, Formicidae, Vespidae, Pentatomidae and Reduviidae. Insect predators species that was most commonly found was Menochilus sexmaculatus with 467 individuals and the least was Sycanus sp. with 1 individual. The conclusion of this study is that there were 16 species of predators from S. frugiperda in Sleman and Gunungkidul Regencies. Practical implications of this research were the insect predators that found in Sleman and Gunungkidul Regencies can be used to maintain the population of Spodoptera frugiperda in two regencies.

Urban community gardens provide habitat for biodiversity within urban landscapes. Beneficial insects, those that provide important ecosystem services like pollination and pest control, are among the many inhabitants of these green spaces. Garden management and the composition of the urban matrix in which they are embedded can affect not only the abundance and species richness of beneficial insects but also their community composition and functional traits. During 2014 and 2015 (June to September), we collected ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in 19 community gardens in three counties of the California Central Coast. We examined the effects of garden- and landscape-level characteristics on ladybird community composition and functional traits. Out of the 19 species collected, only 3 were non-native to California (3 were not identified to species). Similarities in ladybird species composition were not driven by geographic distance between gardens, which suggest that beetles in these landscapes are not experiencing dispersal limitation. Instead, three landscape-level environmental variables and seven garden-scale ones correlated with changes in community composition. Even though we perceive cities as highly disturbed low-quality landscapes, our results suggest that highly mobile arthropods such as ladybird beetles, may not perceive the urban matrix as a barrier to movement and that urban gardens can be inhabited by native species with different sizes, diet breadths and diets. Nevertheless, our results also suggest garden specific management practices, such as altering ground cover, can affect the taxonomic and functional composition of ladybird beetles with potential implications to their ecosystem services.

Effects of exposure to imidacloprid direct and poisoned cotton aphids <i>Aphis gossypii</i> on ladybird <i>Hippodamia variegata</i> feeding behavior

Imidacloprid is a pesticide used to control aphid infestations of cotton plants. However, poisoned aphids also serve as food for the ladybird natural predator Hippodamia variegata. We investigated whether imidacloprid-treated eggs, pupae, and adults of H. variegata and poisoned aphids altered ladybird predatory behavior. Laboratory bioassay results demonstrated that 0.72 g/L imidacloprid was lethal to ladybirds. Imidacloprid significantly reduced the hatching and emergence rates of H. variegata, and these effects were time and dose dependent. Predation was most adversely affected when the ladybirds directly consumed poisoned aphids and less so when directly exposed to the insecticide at sublethal concentrations. Imidacloprid use in cotton fields should be restricted to the initial stages of aphid infestation to avoid the period when adult ladybirds are present.
