Trypanosoma cruzi es el agente causal de la tripanosomiasis americana, padecimiento endémico en México y cuyos reservorios más importantes son los roedores. T. cruzi refiere tropismo al corazón, ocasionando lesiones y colonizando con nidos con amastigotes; por lo que el estudio histológico de este tejido ayuda al diagnóstico. Se capturaron 262 roedores en Yucatán, México; todos considerados en el análisis microscópico, en el cual se observaron lesiones compatibles a la infección por T. cruzi: infiltrado celular inflamatorio (86.7%), degeneración de fibras cardiacas (6.8%) y pericarditis (6.3%). Asimismo, fue posible identificar nidos con amastigotes (2.2%). Este es el primer estudio histológico realizado en roedores sinantrópicos posiblemente infectados por T. cruzi en Yucatán, México.Trypanosoma cruzi is known as the causal agent of American trypanosomiasis, endemic zoonotic disease in Mexico, whose most important reservoirs are rodents. T. cruzi refers tropism to heart, causing various lesions and colonizing with nests of amastigotes; so the histological examination of this tissue helps for diagnosis. A total of 262 individuals were captured in Yucatan, Mexico; all considered in the microscopic analysis, in which different lesions consistent with T. cruzi infection were identified: inflammatory cell infiltration (86.7%), degeneration of cardiac fibers (6.8%) and pericarditis (6.3%). It was also possible to identify several nests with amastigotes (2.2%). This is the first histological study made in synanthropic rodents probably infected by T. cruzi in Yucatan, Mexico.

Most viruses in the genus Flavivirus are horizontally transmitted between hematophagous arthropods and vertebrate hosts, but some are maintained in arthropod- or vertebrate-restricted transmission cycles. Flaviviruses maintained by vertebrate-only transmission are commonly referred to as no known vector (NKV) flaviviruses. Fourteen species and two subtypes of NKV flaviviruses are recognized by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), and Tamana bat virus potentially belongs to this group. NKV flaviviruses have been isolated in nature almost exclusively from bats and rodents; exceptions are the two isolates of Dakar bat virus recovered from febrile humans and the recent isolations of Sokoluk virus from field-collected ticks, which raises questions as to whether it should remain classified as an NKV flavivirus. There is evidence to suggest that two other NKV flaviviruses, Entebbe bat virus and Yokose virus, may also infect arthropods in nature. The best characterized bat- and rodent-associated NKV flaviviruses are Rio Bravo and Modoc viruses, respectively, but both have received limited research attention compared to many of their arthropod-infecting counterparts. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review of NKV flaviviruses, placing a particular emphasis on their classification, host range, geographic distribution, replication kinetics, pathogenesis, transmissibility and molecular biology.

BackgroundRNA viruses commonly infect bats and rodents, including mosquito-borne flaviviruses (MBFV) that affect human and animal health. Serological evidence suggests past interactions between these two mammalian orders with dengue viruses (DENV), West Nile virus (WNV), and yellow fever virus (YFV). Although in Mexico there are reports of these viruses in both host groups, we know little about their endemic cycles or persistence in time and space.MethodsRodents and bats were captured at the Cuitzmala River Basin on the Pacific coast of Jalisco state, Mexico, where MBFV, such as DENV, have been reported in both humans and bats. Samples were taken during January, June, and October 2014, at locations adjacent to the river. Tissue samples were collected from both bats and rodents and serum samples from rodents only. Highly sensitive serological and molecular assays were used to search for current and past evidence of viral circulation.ResultsOne thousand nine hundred forty-eight individuals were captured belonging to 21 bat and 14 rodent species. Seven hundred sixty-nine liver and 764 spleen samples were analysed by means of a specific molecular protocol used to detect flaviviruses. Additionally, 708 serum samples from rodents were examined in order to demonstrate previous exposure to dengue virus serotype 2 (which circulates in the region). There were no positive results with any diagnostic test.DiscussionTo our knowledge, this is the first survey of rodents and only the second survey of bats from the Pacific Coast of Mexico in a search for MBFV. We obtained negative results from all samples. We validated our laboratory tests with negative and positive controls. Our findings are consistent with other empirical and experimental studies in which these mammalian hosts may not replicate mosquito-borne flaviviruses or present low prevalence.ConclusionsTrue-negative results are essential for the construction of distribution models and are necessary to identify potential areas at risk. Negative results should not be interpreted as the local absence of MBFV in the region. On the contrary, we need to establish a long-term surveillance programme to find MBFV presence in the mosquito trophic networks, identifying the potential role of rodents and bats in viral dynamics.
