Serial PBB Levels, PCB Levels, and Clinical Chemistries in Michigan’s PBB Cohort

Abstract: Half of a cohort of 3683 Michigan residents exposed to polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in 1973 and 1974 had 2 serum PBB determinations at a 1- or 2-yr interval. The median decrease in serum PBB levels during both 1- and 2-yr intervals was 1 microgram/L. The geometric mean serum polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) level (6.3 microgram/L) exceeded that of PBB (4.1 micrograms/L), although the range of PCB levels (smaller than 1-57 microgram/L) was narrower than that of PBB levels (smaller than 1-3150 micrograms/L). “…An experimental half-life determined in rats using a multicompartment model that was then extrapolated to humans was reported as 6.5 years (14); the elimination of PBB from rat serum has been shown to be first order (15). A linear relationship between PBB concentrations in adipose tissue and in serum with a ratio of approximately 300:1 has been demonstrated; the different congeners of PBB do not have significantly different partition ratios (16,17).…”

“…Additionally, we evaluated exposure to PCBs. PCB measurements were performed on the majority of the cohort (1976)(1977)(1978)(1979)(1980)(1981)(1982)(1983)(1984)(1985)(1986)(1987)(1988) to determine whether PCBs, a widespread environmental contaminant, might be as important as PBB exposure for the cohort's long-term health status (19). Women in the current study had a maximum of six PCB measurements taken between 1976 and 1988, with a correlation of 0.61 between values.…”
