“…Technical qualification and experience of working in an inter-professional team are often mentioned as aspects required for the expert's good performance. Child protection studies relating to child victimization by domestic violence (Azevedo & Sani, 2017;Trindade & Sani, 2014) have underlined the importance of a consolidated approach founded on basic premises such as the importance of qualified listening to the child, the primacy of non-revictimization, the minimization of harm, and the child's right to protection. In specific cases, involving child and adolescent victims and/or witnesses of domestic violence, the technical and jurisdictional team's actions were found to be disjointed and/or lacking (e.g.…”

“…Studies aimed at giving voice to children are usually conducted with participants who are seven years of age or older (Azevedo & Sani, 2017;Calcing & Benetti, 2014;Gabatz et al, 2010;Lauz & Borges, 2013;Rosado & Campelo, 2011). The present study, due to the fact that the institution welcomes children from zero to six years old, embraced the challenge of working with a younger age group in order to investigate the level of understanding presented by these individuals about the situation experienced by them.…”

“…Throughout the sheltering process there is a rare and almost absent number of opportunities for the children to share their point of view about their conditions, opinions, and assessments, how long they are staying there and what will happen to them (Bernardi, 2010;Rossetti-Ferreira et al, 2012). Because of that they might make hasty assessments of detachment from the institution or inadequate return to the original family, or even believe in a longer sheltering than the necessary, which will repercuss in the construction of the child's subjectivity without paying attention to what they have to say (Azevedo & Sani, 2017;Moreira et al, 2013).…”

“…Furthermore, it should be noted that informed consent is more than just "a consent form or a legal document", it is "a communication and decision process" [25] (p. 5), with specificities relating to the type of research, its objectives, context and participants. Typically social research involves "a two-way exchange of information between researcher and potential participants" [8] (p. 36); however most research with children implies a "triad" that includes necessary interactions with parents or children's legal representatives [10,26]. Yet, in the case of research on VAC, the informed consent process often involves a dynamic of multiple relationships, usually in a hierarchy of gatekeepers.…”
