Sequential analysis of social interaction: Assessing internal versus social determinants of behavior.

Abstract: Predictability and controllability of events influence attributions and affect in many research domains. In face-to-face social interaction, behavior is predictable from actor's own past behavior (internal determinants) and from partner's past behavior (social determinants). This study assessed how affect ratings are related to predictability of vocal activity from internal and social determinants. Time and frequency domain analysis of on-off vocal activity from 55 dyadic gettingacquainted conversations provid… Show more

“…Reliability estimates for the AVTA ranged from 0.91 to 0.99 whereas those for the operator measurements ranged from 0.59 to 0.98. These reliability estimates are consistent with those observed in a number of studies using the AVTA and related methods that allow for sequential analysis of coded speech (e.g., Warner, 1992aWarner, , 1992b, suggesting that the AVTA produces highly reliable data from which frequency and duration of temporal parameters can be obtained.…”

“…Further, while results might differ as a function of the duration of dialogue blocks used for analysis (e.g., in the present study we used 12 five-second blocks per minute for a total of 240 blocks in a 20 minute conversation, while others have used 10-s blocks), different sampling frequencies ranging from 0.250 to 10 s have yielded highly correlated measures of vocal state duration. In other words, as Warner (1992aWarner ( , 1992b convincingly showed, vocal activity from the same conversations sampled at both three times per second and once every 10 s were so highly correlated "as to be virtually indistinguishable (p. 58).…”

“…Although these studies have addressed degrees of interactive contingency, none have used self-contingency (autocorrelation) as a variable in its own right; instead, it has been statistically controlled and removed (see Gottman, 1981). In research on adult conversation, Warner (1992) was unusual in the integrating of "within-actor" and "between-partner" contingencies.…”
