-We studied a potential petroleum source rock deposited in a clastic-dominated ramp environment: the Argiles de Châtillon Formation (Kimmeridgian-Tithonian, Boulonnais area, northern France). The formation was deposited along a proximal-distal gradient on this ramp affected by synsedimentary fault movements. A sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical study was conducted to decipher the distribution patterns of sedimentary parameters along such a depth increase over the ramp. It comes out that smectite distribution unexpectedly mimics the lateral depth evolution despite the good floatability of the mineral. It is also observed that the Argiles de Châtillon could accumulate noticeable amounts of organic matter in spite of paleoenvironmental conditions that were not specifically prone to organic matter preservation and burial (sedimentation rate, mineral particle grain size, productivity, oxygenation level...). Conversely, reactive iron, when being present in limited abundance, must have allowed sulfide ions to react with organic molecules instead of forming iron sulfides, which fostered organic matter preservation and accumulation. This protecting role of organic sulfide incorporation (additional to other favorable factors) cannot exist if reactive iron is relatively abundant. Lastly, our results (still fragmentary) suggest that smectite minerals could carry reactive iron, which would have occasionally hampered organic-matter preservation.Keywords: Kimmeridgian-Tithonian / Boulonnais / organic matter / petroleum source rocks / geochemistry / clay minerals Résumé -Importance des variations latérales discrètes dans les apports détritiques, observées dans des faciès de rampe sédimentaire riches en matière organique (Jurassique supérieur du Boulonnais). La formation des Argiles de Châtillon (Kimméridgien-Tithonien, Boulonnais) est un bon analogue géologique de roche mère pétrolière déposée en contexte de rampe clastique. Ces dépôts se sont mis en place le long d'un transect proximal-distal sur une rampe affectée par des mouvements tectoniques synsédimentaires. Pour mettre en évidence et comprendre la distribution des paramètres sédimentaires en fonction de l'évolution de la profondeur, une étude sédimentologique, minéralogique et géochimique fut entreprise. Il en ressort que la distribution de la smectite au sein du cortège argileux respecte ce gradient, malgré la flottabilité reconnue de ce minéral. Il apparaît également que les Argiles de Châtillon ont pu accumuler des quantités sensibles de matière organique malgré un contexte de dépôt peu favorable à la préservation et à l'enfouissement de celle-ci. En revanche, le fer réactif, quand il était présent en faible quantité dans les sédiments, a pu permettre aux ions sulfures de réagir avec les molécules organiques, plutôt que de former des sulfures de fer. Cette sulfuration a pu accroître la résistance de la matière organique à la dégradation microbienne, ce qui explique la bonne préservation du carbone organique. Recent studies of the upper Kimmeridgian of the Boulonnais area (northernmost France) have provided a sequence-stratigraphical framework that is here used to help interpret variations in sedimentary organic matter (OM) content and composition in response to fluctuations in relative sea-level. The organic facies are characterised using a combination of palynofacies, bulk organic geochemistry (TOC, Rock Eval pyrolysis, and sulphur data), and the particlesize distribution of the total palynological residues. The organic facies show a good correlation with the sequence stratigraphy, exhibiting peak TOC, HI, total S and S org values in the lithofacies deposited around the two MFS. The palynofacies in these intervals is characterised by a high content of fluorescent, orange, marine AOM. There is a strong correlation between the orange AOM and the total and organic sulphur contents. Similar positive correlations between orange AOM and organic sulphur have previously been observed in the distal organic-rich sediments of the Kimmeridge Clay Formation of Dorset (lateral time equivalents of the Boulonnais facies), but there the sulphur contents are lower, indicating that organic sulphur content of orange AOM is not fixed, suggestive of preservation-related parallel but not intrinsically related trends. The S data can be used to estimate an apparent burial efficiency and hence the proportion of the primary productivity preserved; this allows a rough estimate of palaeoproductivity. Model calculations suggest that for a sulphide retention of 30-70% and uncompacted sedimentation rate estimates in the range 5-10 cm/ka, the mean palaeoproductivity was in the range 52-175 gC/m 2 /a (up to 6% of which was preserved). Thus, if the preservation is high, as is the case for MFS, the palaeoproductivity does not need to be above average for shelf waters to produce a given TOC.

Kimmeridgian limestone (KL) strata are one of the best examples of peritidal carbonates that record palaeogeographical and palaeoclimate conditions in the Eastern Pontides, Eastern Black Sea region. These Kimmeridgian limestone strata consist of well‐preserved dark grey lime‐mudstones that serve as essential archives for various geochemical proxies. This study presents new data on trace elements, rare earth elements and stable isotopes (δ18O, δ13C) to enhance our understanding of the palaeoclimate, weathering patterns, salinity, redox conditions and productivity during the deposition of these strata. Furthermore, organic chemistry data, including total organic carbon, Rock‐Eval (S1, S2, S3, HI, OI) and production index, are presented to discuss their hydrocarbon potential. The Kimmeridgian limestone strata exhibit relatively high total organic carbon content (0.16–0.22%) with an average of 0.19%, δ18O values ranging from −2.12 to −0.69‰, and δ13C values ranging from 1.42 to 2.09‰. Additionally, they display distinct rare earth element characteristics such as low La/YbN (0.64–1.00) ratios, varying Gd*/Gd (0.54–1.16) ratios, high Eu/Eu* (1.19–1.84) ratios and Ce/Ce* (0.91–1.16) ratios. The Kimmeridgian limestone strata also exhibit chondritic Y/Ho (30.48) and Zr/Hf (40.35) ratios, relatively high redox‐sensitive element values, low Ga/Rb (0.10–1.10; an average of 0.29) ratios and high K2O/Al2O3 ratios (0.2–0.40; an average of 0.27). According to the geochemical results of this study that are integrated with published stratigraphy and palaeontological data, the Kimmeridgian limestone strata are interpreted as having been deposited in a shallow subtidal lagoon environment or a partly protected interior ramp setting. Although sea‐level fluctuations influenced the palaeoenvironmental changes, ocean circulation along the inner platform supplied nutrients to the basin. The possible occurrence of low‐temperature water/rock interaction under reduced oxygen conditions contributed to additional element flux. Palaeoclimate indices suggest the existence of an aridification event, wherein arid climate played an important role in low weathering input, organic matter source, productivity, evaporation and salinity enhancement. The climate, accompanied by sedimentary factors, facilitated enhanced productivity, a balanced sedimentation rate and the preservation of organic matter under reducing conditions. Contrary to the anticipated outcome, considering the high productivity and anoxic depositional conditions suggested by microfacies and inorganic geochemical results, the over‐maturation processes have resulted in a notable decline in the organic matter content and hydrocarbon potential of the samples.
