“…Such movements can generate variability at random loci or have multifactorial effects, such as DNA deletions and the formation of stable cointegrates. Such events are separate from the dissemination of Tn5053/Tn402-like elements afforded by their affinity for some res target regions, such as that in the par locus of the promiscuous IncP plasmids (12,49).…”

“…Their role is unclear but we assume functional associations since these accessory genes (or a part of it) are found in other Tn3-related transposons. In these transposons they are either in combination with antibiotic resistance determinants like for Tn6001, Tn1403, and Tn1404* derived from clinical and environmental Pseudomonas strains (Stokes et al 2007;Tseng et al 2007), or occur alone like in Tn1013 from the IncP-1a plasmid pBS228 (Haines et al 2007).…”

“…However, eight samples (soils and sediments), representative of all collecting stations, with the exception of the geothermal area (Table 1), yielded hybridizing PCR products of the expected size (about 240 bp) with an IncP trfA2 probe (Figure 1). DNA sequencing of two PCR products from sampling stations 2 (252 bp) and 4 (242 bp) (Table 1) were used to query DNA databases via the BLASTN Network Service [15] and were shown to share 98%-99% base identity with a sequence upstream of the N-terminal end of the trfA gene of IncP-1α plasmid pBS228 [16]. Interestingly, the occurrence of conjugation among moderately halophilic bacteria, which are the most abundant prokaryotes that inhabit hypersaline environments, was demonstrated by using the self-transmissible IncP-1α plasmid RK2 [17].…”
