Sequence analysis of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer 2 from populations of Anopheles nuneztovari (Diptera: Culicidae).

Abstract: Sequence variation of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) was examined for populations of the malaria vector Anopheles nuneztovari collected in Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Suriname, and Brazil. Mosquitoes from Colombia and Venezuela had identical ITS2 sequences and were distinguished from sequences in other populations by three insertion/deletion events (indels) and by one transversion. The length of the ITS2 was 363-369 bp, and it had a G+C content of 55.3%-55.7%. Variation in the length … Show more

“…nuneztovari populations in Colombia and Venezuela compared to those in the Brazilian Amazonia. This proposal was confirmed by several morphological, chromosomal, molecular, behavioural and genetic flow studies (Fritz et al 1994, Hribar 1994, Linley et al 1996, Conn et al 1998, Tadei et al 1998, Scarpassa et al 1999, Scarpassa & Tadei 2000). Most recently, it was estimated that An.…”

“…The most frequent sequence was identical to previously published sequences of An. nuneztovari C from Colombia (Sierra et al 2004) (AY028081-124, AY028128), Brazil (Marrelli et al 2005) (AF461749) and Venezuela (Fritz et al 1994) (L22462).…”

“…In the ITS2 region of Anopheles species, simple tandem repeats (2–5 bp in length) are observed frequently (Fritz et al 1994; Cornel et al 1996; Xu and Qu 1997; Jariyapan et al 2005; Li and Wilkerson 2007). Variations in the type and number of simple repeats have been used to distinguish between species of the An.…”

“…albitarsis complex (Li and Wilkerson 2007), as well as populations of An. nuneztovari Gabaldón (Fritz et al 1994). These simple repeats are thought to arise partly due to slipped-strand mispairing (Levinson and Gutman 1987).…”
