Sequelae of trauma to primary maxillary incisors. I. Complications in the primary dentition

Abstract: Two hundred and eighty-seven children with a total of 545 traumatized primary upper incisors were followed using standardized procedures until the age of 10. Extraction was the only treatment offered when intervention was necessary. The immediate as well as the long-term consequences of trauma were studied on the basis of this material. “…When analyzing the radiographic sequelae observed, it was found that pathological inflammatory resorption was the most frequent alteration, in agreement with other published studies on the subject. 18 With regard to seeking treatment, most of the sample sought care at a not immediate time (more than 24 hours after the trauma), which could be a critical factor in determining a post-traumatism prognosis. A possible factor involved in the delay of initial care is the perception of the severity of the event by the children's parents or guardians.…”

“…2 There are several studies in the literature that evaluate the prevalence of dental traumatism in the primary and permanent dentitions, 1,2,6,12,15,16 although just a few of them present the epidemiology of primary teeth sequelae in face of these traumas. 17,18 In this context, the present study was conducted to assess the prevalence of traumatic injuries in children aged 0-6 years and the resulting sequelae in the primary dentition. The children were attended by the Dental Trauma Project, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil.…”

“…Povoljan ishod (oporavak pulpnog i periodontalnog tkiva) je opisan u 50-90% slučajeva [2]. Pod nepovoljnim ishodom podrazumjeva se promjena boje krunice zuba, nekroza pulpe, obliteracija kanala korjena zube, retrakcija gingive, trajna dislokacija zuba, patološka resorpciju korjena, smetnje u fiziološkoj eksfolijaciji mliječnih zuba i prijevremeni gubitak zuba [1][2][3][4]. Oču-vanje kvitaliteta zuba, funkcionalnost i estetika, kao i sprečavanje nastanka komplikacija jesu osnove multidisciplinarnog pristupa pri svakom tretmanu trauma zuba [3,5].…”
