Sentinel-2 Level 1 Products and Image Processing Performances

Abstract: ABSTRACT:In partnership with the European Commission and in the frame of the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) program, the European Space Agency (ESA) is developing the Sentinel-2 optical imaging mission devoted to the operational monitoring of land and coastal areas. The Sentinel-2 mission is based on a satellites constellation deployed in polar sun-synchronous orbit. While ensuring data continuity of former SPOT and LANDSAT multi-spectral missions, Sentinel-2 will also offer wide improve… Show more

“…The GPS inaccuracy affects the co‐location of RS and in‐situ data. For S2 imagery, a GPS location error of 3, 6 and 18 m is given for 10‐, 20‐ and 60‐m bands, respectively (Baillarin et al., ). Due to the field sampling conditions (i.e.…”

“…This multi-spectral capability enables calculation of the normalized difference water index (NDWI), which can differentiate surface water bodies from surrounding glacial ice and snow. We use the Sentinel-2 Level-1C product, (orthorectified top-of-atmosphere reflectance) with sub-pixel multispectral registration (Baillarin et al, 2012), provided freely by ESA's Scientific Data Hub (https://scihub.copernicus. eu/dhus/#/home).…”

“…The 6 bands at 20 m include 4 narrow bands in the vegetation red edge spectral domain (705 nm, 740 nm, 775 nm and 865 nm) and 2 large SWIR bands (1610 nm and 2190 nm) dedicated to snow/ice/cloud detection and to vegetation moisture stress assessment. The 3 bands at 60 m are dedicated to atmospheric correction (443 nm for aerosols and 940 nm for water vapor) and to cirrus detection (1380 nm) (Baillarin et al, 2012).…”
