Sensor-based platforms for remote management of chronic diseases in developing regions: A qualitative approach examining the perspectives of healthcare professionals

Abstract: The continuous monitoring of chronic diseases serves as one of the cornerstones in the efforts to improve the quality of life of patients and maintain the healthcare services provided to them. This study aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the perspectives of healthcare professionals on using sensor-based networks (SBN) used for remote and continuous monitoring of patients with chronic illness in Kosovo, a developing country. A qualitative research method was used to interview 26 healthcare profession… Show more

“…Long-term and continuous monitoring facilitates the early detection of fluctuations (wearing off) and PIGD in patients, which the treating physicians could not otherwise identify. Timely detection and treatment could help patients better understand their status ( 77 ) and improve the probability of living a normal life while staying effective in their work. This is expected to have a serious impact to the Health Economics of the System and the patients' Quality of Life.…”

“…New and ongoing studies are expected to provide additional evidence about the clinical benefits of this new paradigm, that PDMonitor ® is a part of, enabling a wider adoption ( 81 ). Physicians and healthcare systems may need to adopt and embrace this new paradigm in order to overcome current barriers ( 77 , 82 ) as well as to unlock the full potential of continuous patient monitoring.…”

“…A study based on a sensor platform for remote management of patients with chronic diseases in the UK shows that remote monitoring can provide timely vital signs allowing medical teams to spot changes in a patient's condition. It can also enable patients with chronic diseases to enhance their understanding of disease-speci c problems and nursing, achieving early diagnosis and treatment [24] . Therefore, we can consider whether to add this monitoring service as a module into the "Internet + nursing" platform, remotely monitoring the changes in patients' condition after the home nursing task has been performed, so that the medical team can be called as soon as it spots an abnormal condition in a patient.…”
