Sensitive Amperometric Determination of Thiocyanates at Ionic Liquid Nanohybrid Kaolinite Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode

Abstract: Electrochemical sensors have been developed by modifying a glassy carbon electrode with organo‐kaolinite hybrid materials. These materials were obtained by the grafting of four ionic liquids (1‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐4‐benzylpyridinium chloride, 1‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐4‐(tert‐butyl)pyridinium chloride, 1‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐4‐ethylpyridinium chloride and 1‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐4‐methylpyridinium chloride) on the interlayer aluminol surfaces of kaolinite. With the presence of ionic liquids in the interlayer space of kaolinite, … Show more

“…The detection limit (3S/N) is estimated to be 3.0×10 −6 mol L −1 . Compared with previously reported modified electrodes for thiocyanate determination (Table ), the proposed CTAB‐CNTs/GCE shows a linear range close to iron phthalocyanine‐linked 4‐mercaptopyridine/Au and kaolinite‐ionic liquids/GCE , but higher detection limit. Although Nano‐Ag/CNTs/GCE and Gold nanoparticles/CNTs/CPE obviously exhibit better sensing performances, they use noble metal nanomaterials which increase the detection cost.…”

“…As can be seen, a broad anodic peak appears at ca. 1.0 V on the bare GCE, attributed to the oxidation of thiocyanate, which can be described by the following reaction : true2SCN-NCS-SCN+2e- …”

“…The anion exchange capacity provided by the IL functionalized kaolinite thin film casted onto the working electrode significantly reduced the detection limit of the sensors. On the other hand, the organophilic character of para‐substituted substituents were used for the removal of 2,4‐D, a commonly used pesticide with high toxicity …”
