Sensitisation to aeroallergens among asthmatic and non-asthmatic adolescents living in a poor region in the Northeast of Brazil

Abstract: Although sensitisation to aeroallergens was high among non-asthmatic adolescents, asthma was associated with parental history of atopic disease and sensitisation to P. americana and Canis familiaris but not to D. pteronyssinus showing that local studies are mandatory for the tailoring of appropriate management of allergic diseases.

“…Exposure to molds is associated with allergic diseases, however, it prevalence vary widely probably because of environmental differences, and wide range of diagnostic tests used [ 2 ]. We assessed aeroallergen exposure through a questionnaire, not with objective measures, however, the results was similar to data obtained by Brazilian studies, with sensitization prevalence between 46.8% [ 35 ] and 54% [ 36 ] to at least one aeroallergen in asthmatic children evaluated by skin prick test or standard allergen extracts panel.…”

“…Considering that asthma results from the complex interplay between genetic susceptibility and ubiquitous environmental factors, avoiding the latter completely may not only seem impossible but impractical and very limiting to the patient. It is more important, therefore, to resolve the HDM level that could result to either sensitization or tolerance since sensitization to HDMs among asthmatic adolescents has been demonstrated to be not significantly different from non-asthmatics [26]. …”

“…On the other hand, Sarinho et al , studying asthmatic and non-asthmatic adolescents from the municipality of Caruaru, state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, observed a 54.0% prevalence of sensitization for asthmatics, with prevalence of sensitization to cockroach allergens ( 49 ) . Previous findings point to the need for local studies, with the aim of identifying the most relevant allergens and guiding more targeted therapeutic actions.…”

“…Por outro lado, Sarinho et al , ao estudarem adolescentes asmáticos e não asmáticos da cidade de Caruaru, nordeste brasileiro, observaram prevalência de sensibilização de 54,0%para os asmáticos, com predomínio de sensibilização aos alérgenos da barata ( 49 ) . Os achados anteriores apontam para a necessidade de estudos locais, com o intuito de se identificarem os alérgenos de maior relevância e orientar condutas terapêuticas mais bem direcionadas.…”
