“…TRT combines counseling and partial masking (either with sound generators or hearing aids) to modify pathological brain activity as well as promote habituation, and is widely used in clinical practice. However, there is mixed evidence on the efficacy of TRT (Grewal et al, 2014;Barozzi et al, 2017;Bauer et al, 2017;Zenner et al, 2017;Searchfield, 2020). In addition, different applications of simultaneous multimodal stimulation have shown promising results e.g., combination of sound and somatosensory stimulation (Marks et al, 2018;Conlon et al, 2020).…”

“…Hearing Aids (HAs) have been used as tinnitus management tools since at least the late 1940s ( 37 ) and this continued with the arrival of fully digital aids in the mid 1990s. HA are used in tinnitus management to reduce accompanying hearing handicap, reduce the levels of attention paid to tinnitus, compensate for deafferentation, and by raising the audibility of environmental sounds so that tinnitus can be masked ( 38 ). In the early 2000s the United Kingdom National Health Service modernized their hearing aid program, and digital aids became available to NHS patients.…”

“…The pathogenesis of tinnitus remains unclear, which is probably related to abnormal variations on the auditory pathway [ 8 ]. Tinnitus frequency is often corresponding to the hearing impairment region inside the cochlea [ 2 ], thus we invented a strategy to modulate the peaceful music and jointly enhance the upper and lower frequency band adjacent to tinnitus pitch based on the lateral inhibiting effect [ 27 , 28 ], and the modified sound could be generated and played via our patented software/APP named Fudan Tinnitus Relieving System (FTRS). We plan to verify and compare the clinal efficacy of MTRS to UM in the current RCT.…”
