Semiconductor-laser-pumped high-power upconversion laser

Abstract: A high-power optically pumped semiconductor laser operating around 970 nm has been used as a pumping source for an upconversion laser based on an Er3+ doped LiLuF4 crystal. Nearly 0.5 W of continuous wave (cw) output power and 0.8 W peak power at a 50% pump duty cycle could be achieved at a wavelength of 552 nm. This represents the highest output power from a room temperature upconversion laser ever reported. Laser threshold and slope efficiency were measured to be below 100 mW of absorbed pump power and 30%, … Show more

“…Moreover, many O 2À vacancies are present in the Ta 2 O 5 structure, as reported in the literature. 38,42 Consequently, in order to ensure neutrality, many different sites are also formed due to distortion in the Ta 2 O 5 structure. Hence, the RE ions added to Ta 2 O 5 may occupy many different sites.…”

“…37 Recently, Heumann et al obtained an output power of 1 W for a UC laser system, by employing a diode laser as the pump source, which represents the highest power output recorded for a continuous UC laser operating in the green region. 38 There are countless studies on UC in glasses, glass ceramic fibers, bulks, and powders in the literature, and a limited number of investigations are related to films and planar waveguides. The application of the RE-doped upconverter film in solar cells for enhanced efficiency has been reported.…”

“…It is well known that Li + ions can play important role in enhancement of luminescence properties [12,13]. The enhancement of upconversion luminescence can result from the break and distortion of local crystal field symmetry around lanthanide ions such as Er 3+ ion by Li + [14,15].…”

“…Significant progress was made with the discovery of Er 3+ doped LiLuF 4 crystals emitting bright green emission at room temperature. 16 Most of the currently studied upconverting lasers are based on heavy-metal fluoride fibers (e.g. ZBLAN 17,18 ) which tend to be expensive.…”
