Semiconducting Polymers: Poly(thiophenes)

Abstract: Owing to the excellent optoelectronic properties and ease of synthesis, poly(3‐alkylthiophenes) (P3ATs) have been extensively studied as one of the best conjugated semiconducting polymeric materials for organic electronic applications, such as organic field effect transistors (OFETs), bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells, and organic light emitting diodes. The asymmetric structure of the 3‐alkylthiophene monomer leads to the formation of three different regioisomers due to the different coupling possibilities… Show more

“…This was done in a mechanical mixer at a temperature of 150°C. The polymers were mixed in weight proportions of 2-3-5% vinyl groups, with homogeneous mixtures obtained by adding portions with a 10-minute interval between them and other components [11][12][13] .…”

“…The mixing of polymers such as polyethylene and natural rubber is characterized by thermodynamic instability of the system, due to significant differences between the structural organization and properties of semi-crystalline PE and amorphous NR. The mixing of such components affects the kinetics of the crystallization processes of the semicrystalline component [56], which largely determines the properties of the composite. This approach is used in hardening, to control the phase structure, to increase the impact strength and for directed modification of polymer composites [57].…”

“…[246] A current review highlighted the evolution of the synthetic methods utilized for the synthesis of regioregular P3HT homopolymer and block copolymers, their charge transport properties, the effects of regioregularity, molecular weight, processing techniques on the charge transport properties. [247] The controlled end-group functionalization and well-defined synthesis of P3HT is feasible via Kumada catalyzed transfer polycondensation developed in the last years. [246][247][248][249][250][251] This paved the way towards the synthesis of well-defined block copolymers with P3HT blocks.…”

“…[247] The controlled end-group functionalization and well-defined synthesis of P3HT is feasible via Kumada catalyzed transfer polycondensation developed in the last years. [246][247][248][249][250][251] This paved the way towards the synthesis of well-defined block copolymers with P3HT blocks. Although P3HT has a decreased flexibility in the backbone due to conjugation and it is often termed as a rod-like component, its block copolymers have been shown to form the typical cylindrical and lamellar morphologies wellknown from coil-coil diblock copolymers.…”
