Abstract：Steel is a particularly challenging material to semi-solid process because of the high temperatures involved and the potential for surface oxidation. Here the experience of semi-solid processing will be reviewed and the current situation in relation to commercial application assessed. The review will include discussion of the range of potential steel materials which are amenable to thixoformingn and identification of suitable steels; modelling of die fill and rheological properties of semi solid steel; technology considerations for industrialisation; die development and the properties of thixoformed products.

W pracy omówiono technologię formowania stopów metali z zakresu stało-ciekłego. Przedstawiono kryteria termofizyczne jakimi powinien charakteryzować się stop przeznaczony do procesu oraz metody przygotowywania struktury globularnej w fazie ciekłej oraz stałej. Na przykładzie stopu aluminium z serii Al7075 oraz wysokowęglowej stali martenzytycznej określono wpływ zastosowania modyfikatorów na właściwości mechaniczne, mikrostrukturę oraz zakres temperatur pomiędzy solidusem a likwidusem. SŁOWA KLUCZOWE: odlewanie tikstropowe, stal, modyfikacja, borThe paper describes Semi-Solid Metal Processing (SSM) of aluminum alloy and steel. The thermo-physical properties of alloys at semi-solid temperature range and methods globular microstructure preparation were discussed. Influence of modifier on mechanical properties, microstructure and solidus-liquidus range in Al7075 aluminum alloy and H18 martensitic steel was studied. Obszar występowania tych dwóch faz w stopach dotyczy przedziału temperatur pomiędzy likwidusem a solidusem, zgodnie z dwuskładnikowym układem równowagi, który został przedstawiony na rysunku 1a [2,3]. Odpowiedni zakres dwufazowy w stopach metali (obszar zaznaczony na zielono na rys. 1a) można osiągnąć przez krystalizację z fazy ciekłej lub nagrzewanie z fazy stałej [4].

Abstract. The evolution of microstructure affect from different pouring temperatures and holding times using a direct thermal method is presented in this paper. The direct thermal method is one of the thermal techniques which are used to produce semi-solid metal feedstock. In this experimental work, aluminium 7075 alloy was used. The experiments were carried out by processing a sample with a 0.7 °C/s cooling rate to evaluate the formation of the microstructure. In direct thermal method experiment, a molten 7075 was poured into a cylindrical copper mould at different pouring temperatures of 680 °C and 660 °C meanwhile the holding time of 20 s, 40 s and 60 s before quenched into room temperature water. The sample processed by the cooling rate of 0.7 °C/s produced a large microstructure. The formation of a spheroidal microstructure was obtained with the combination of a suitable pouring temperature and holding time. The pouring temperature of 665 °C and the holding time of 60 s produced a finer and uniform microstructure that is suitable for semi-solid feedstock.
