Increasing and variable traffic demands due to triple play services pose significant Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) resource management challenges for service providers. Managing subscriber expectations via consolidated IPTV quality reporting will play a crucial role in guaranteeing return-on-investment for players in the increasingly competitive IPTV delivery ecosystem. We propose a fault diagnosis and problem isolation solution that addresses the IPTV monitoring challenge and recommends problem-specific remedial action. IPTV delivery-specific metrics are collected at various points in the delivery topology, the residential gateway and the Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) through to the video Head-End. They are then pre-processed using new metric rules. A semantic uplift engine takes these raw metric logs; it then transforms them into World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)'s standard Resource Description Framework (RDF) for knowledge representation and annotates them with expert knowledge from the IPTV domain. This system is then integrated with a monitoring visualization framework that displays monitoring events, alarms, and recommends solutions. A suite of IPTV fault scenarios is presented and used to evaluate the feasibility of the solution. We demonstrate that professional service providers can provide timely reports on the quality of IPTV service delivery using this system.Neither the entire paper nor any part of its content has been published or has been accepted for publication elsewhere. The Semantic Networking concept has been introduced to solve the QoS, scalability and complexity challenges for the Future of Internet. Based on traffic awareness and considering flow entities, it contributes to an adaptive management of the network and provides better knowledge of the transported traffic. Studying the processing time of the classification compatible with real-time operation of such networks is a key question for implementation purposes. In this paper, we present interesting techniques for classification of traffic in semantic networks. The Sample & Hold and multi-stage filter schemes are studied to detect the biggest flows. Their performance is evaluated on real traffic traces. In addition the classification of traffic according to the originating application is investigated. In particular, we analyze the influence of many parameters derived from a traffic flow on the performance of application identification and classify them according to their accuracy. By doing this, a light scheme is proposed able to classify accurately the traffic. We finally discuss the architecture of an hardware implementation to validate the concept of semantic networking.

We investigate infinite horizon deterministic optimal control problems with both gradual and impulsive controls, where any finitely many impulses are allowed simultaneously. Both discounted and long run time average criteria are considered. We establish very general and at the same time natural conditions, under which the dynamic programming approach results in an optimal feedback policy. The established theoretical results are applied to the Internet congestion control, and by solving analytically and nontrivially the underlying optimal control problems, we obtain a simple threshold-based active queue management scheme, which takes into account the main parameters of the transmission control protocols, and improves the fairness among the connections in a given network.
