Semantic integration of enterprise information systems using meta-metadata ontology

This paper describes the enhanced LIRE (LInked RElations) architecture for creating relations between datasets available on open government portals. The architecture is improved to be applicable on different open government data platforms using minimal configuration at the Data processing layer. We evaluated the applicability of enhanced LIRE, its advantages and disadvantages, which resulted in necessary recommendations for the publication of dataset's metadata to obtain better associations between datasets. Moreover, we introduced a LINDAT indicator that reflects the percentage of linked data in the total possible number of linked data on open government data portals.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the benefits of an approach in which document management systems (DMSs) are based on a formal and explicit document model, primarily in terms of facilitating domain-specific customization. Design/methodology/approach Within this paper, a generic document model is proposed. The model consists of two layers. A general purpose layer, which represents common features of the documents, and a domain-specific layer, modeling properties particular to application domain. The general purpose layer is based on ISO 82045, providing high degree of interoperability with other systems developed with respect to this set of standard. Findings Splitting document model into the layers enables DMSs to be tailored for each particular domain of application, depending on the general purpose layer. The existence of domain-specific layer allows documents to be interpreted differently in different domains of application. Practical implications In order to enable customization of DMS for a particular domain, the implementation of domain-specific document layer is required. Also, the proposed model does not explicitly deal with document dynamics. Originality/value The proposed document ontology is general enough to provide the representation of documents not depending on a specific scope of application, yet flexible enough to enable extensions through which domain-specific document features can be expressed. The separation of document model enables development of core DMS offering services relying explicitly on the general purpose layer on one hand, as well as domain-specific customization of DMS on the other.

TaxoMulti: Rule-Based Expert System to Customize Product Taxonomies for Multi-Channel E-commerce

Taxonomies are used as product categories to facilitate users navigating through an e-commerce portal with the help of hierarchically structured concepts. However, the identical taxonomy is shown to each customer regardless of the channel used. This is challenging for the customers in terms of user experience, as the screen size is rigid, and has not a flexible format like a printed catalog. Simply reducing the taxonomy as suggested in existing works is not sufficient, as it leads to semantic misrepresentation of the product domain. To overcome the inflexibility of product taxonomies, the rule-based expert system TaxoMulti is presented in this paper. The main objectives of our descriptive research are the formulation of the taxonomy over- and undersize problem in multi-channel context, before different types of flexible mediator concepts are discussed that allow overcoming these challenges. Using our novel method, marketing experts can now provide different taxonomies including the same semantics to be shown on different channels. The method is implemented using logic programming, allowing the integration of an inference engine utilizing background knowledge without changing the underlying logic of the used information (management) system. The comprehensive experiments on three public and private databases highlight the improvement when adding different types of mediator concepts for the adaption process. Compared to existing best performing works in related fields, TaxoMulti has achieved an improvement of + 26.31 % for the reduction of the taxonomy, + 60 % for the enlargement of the taxonomy, and + 21.21 % in terms of flexibility.
