Multilayer document model for semantic document management services

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the benefits of an approach in which document management systems (DMSs) are based on a formal and explicit document model, primarily in terms of facilitating domain-specific customization. Design/methodology/approach Within this paper, a generic document model is proposed. The model consists of two layers. A general purpose layer, which represents common features of the documents, and a domain-specific layer, modeling properties particular to application domai… Show more

“…From the conceptual viewpoint, to the best of our knowledge, this paper presents a novel and comprehensive approach to the modeling process of a given reality, based on four levels and four processes. From the theoretical viewpoint, the MFSM recognizes and integrates different modeling perspectives present in other models that address modeling-specific parts of reality (e.g., Bastos et al, 2018;Sladic et al, 2017;Castano et al, 2018;Rousi et al, 2016).…”

“…For instance, in addition to the fact that a given car can be easily identified through the three previous processes, they do not enable the association of this same car with domains such as all existing types of cars, all types of vehicles, or all types of transport systems, or with the specific spatial-temporal domain in which it is inserted. Thus, it is important to consider that besides its intrinsic meaning, an object may be associated with different domains that can be purely thematic, or spatial-temporal (Bastos et al, 2018;Kim et al, 2018;Pfaff et al, 2018;Sladic et al, 2017;Troncy et al, 2017). Thus, the domains are important elements to show the relative positioning of a given object in the semantic context [5] to which it is related.…”

“…As proposed in [36], the semantic document approach can be applied to the legal domain. Th e semantic representation of legal documents is the fi rst and necessary step of the approach, continuing with the semantic modeling of metadata (the implementation of legislative metadata layer) and ending with the semantic enrichment of legislative document workfl ow.…”
