Semantic Choice and Personality Structure

Abstract: Automatic-Efficient Conserves Laboratory Manpower The Fisher Pipette Washer with Cleaning Jar, Rinsing Jars and cleaning material recommended for use with it enable the laboratory to adopt an entire new system of pipette washing-one that produces clean glassware, greatly reduces the time and effort involved, and conserves the man power of the laboratory.

“…The foundation of this assertion is that memory structure determines the availability of information during decision making from moment to moment (Deese, 1962;Meyer & Schvaneveldt, 1976). Semantic relatedness can be measured by tasks that evaluate the accessibility of words in connection with other words or phrases, such as word association, semantic differential, and outcome expectancy tasks (Darkes & Goldman, 1998;Goodenough, 1946;Szalay et al, 1999).…”

“…There have been a number of attempts to develop verbal measures of M-F in adults that do not involve the standard inventory or questionnaire format, among them are adjective checklists (Berdie, 1959;Heilbrun, 1964), a word association test (Goodenough, 1946), and a semantic differential technique (Reece, 1964). In general, the basis for item selection has again been the differential response patterns of the two sex groups, with the hope that the items are less tainted by sex role stereotypes than those in questionnaires, thereby producing a "truer" measure of M-F. Goodenough is the only one who seems to be aware of the bipolarity problem and no one attempts to deal with the issue of dimensionality.…”

“…Goodenough (1946), using a word association test, originally attempted to use the Terman-Miles weighting procedure to develop a scoring key for M-F in both men and women. “…In the present experiments, the pretask was selected to provide varied semantic contexts, in the expectation that this would lead to better differentiated priming effects. It has been shown that 5"s profession (Foley & Macmillan, 1943) or sex (Goodenough, 1946), the verbal context (Howes & Osgood, 1954), even the condition of administration (Siipola, Walker, & Kolb, 1955), may affect associations in unpredictable ways. Similarly, any change in the semantic context of the pretask in which priming is effected should alter the subsequent associative availability of the word.…”
