Self-Similar Modular Architectures for Reconfigurable Space Systems

Abstract: Modular architectures have been increasingly favored for systems requiring some aspect of flexibility. A growing number of concepts, however, are being developed that have a specific kind of modular architecture in which the entire system is built of self-similar modules. In these systems each module or building block is identical (or very similar) either in external form, or both in form and function. The self-similarity allows for the highest degree of reconfigurability and is emerging to be a consistent cho… Show more

“…The complexity of intermeshing states with different customer needs, functions, and conflicts makes successful transformer design an intimidating goal. Much research has been done on specific areas of transformation, such as robotics and space exploration [4,5], as well as flexible manufacturing processes [6]. Individual designers and companies have identified trends and use domain-specific design processes [7,8].…”

“…In response to the evolving demands across various domains, including those posed by wildfires, ongoing efforts have increasingly shifted towards the study and development of reconfigurable systems. The list encompasses field-programmable gate arrays [18], reconfigurable machine tools [19], morphing-wing UAVs [20], and reconfigurable modular space systems [21]. With the escalating global use of UAVs, the concept of reconfigurable UAVs has caught the attention.…”

“…Parametric cost estimating depends on historical data and regression analysis to create Cost Estimating Relationships [10] (CERs). In recent decades, parametric cost estimation models widely used mainly include Unmanned Space Vehicle Cost Model [11] (USCM), Small Satellite Cost Model [12] (SSCM), NASA Instrument Cost Model [13] (NICM), Mission Operations Cost Estimating Tool [14] (MOCET), NASA Air Force Cost Model [15] (NAFCOM), Spacecraft/Vehicle Level Cost Model [16] (SVLCM), and Project Cost Estimating Capability (PCEC) [17], etc. Specifically, SSCM is developed by The Aerospace Corporation, which estimates the development and manufacturing costs of small satellites.…”
