“…Several pathways support the reported association between hearing impairment and incident depressive symptoms. First, hearing impairment has been associated with a wide range of adverse social consequences such as higher rates of unemployment (35), greater social isolation (9, 13) and a withdrawal from leisure activities (36), which may contribute to the development of depressive symptoms (9). Nevertheless, while the current analysis was adjusted for living alone status, more specific markers of social isolation such as the Social Network Index (37) should be accounted for in the future.…”

“…The discomfort and frustration resulting from this can prompt withdrawal or avoidance of social situations, which can in turn severely limit activities ( Heffernan et al, 2016 ). This can result in a less active and satisfying lifestyle, and may lead to depression ( Cohen-Mansfield et al, 2010 ; Mikkola et al, 2016 ). Understanding why older listeners struggle with speech perception in noisy situations is a critical first step to any rehabilitative effort to ensure successful communication, active aging and well-being.…”

“…Observational studies of older adults worldwide have reported associations between age-related hearing loss and impaired social functioning, reduced social support, and increased role limitation due to emotional problems (31, 32). The presence of hearing problems has been shown to reduce the amount of time older adults spend outside their homes and increase the odds of withdrawing from leisure activities (33). This finding obtains in both community settings as well as in nursing homes, where residents with severe hearing loss have been shown to have 1.4 times greater odds of demonstrating low social engagement and 1.3 times greater odds of spending little time participating in facility activities (34).…”
