Self-Propagating Assembly of a Molecular-Based Multilayer

Abstract: Accelerated growth of a molecular-based material that is an active participant in its continuing self-propagated assembly has been demonstrated. This nonlinear growth process involves diffusion of palladium into a network consisting of metal-based chromophores linked via palladium.

“…XPS studies were also conveniently used for the molecular characterization of PyAzoC4-IM. This technique is particularly useful to this end, as it permits high vertical resolution, provides information on the bonding states of the molecules bound to the substrate, [18] and allows estimation of the surface elemental composition once the relevant atomic sensitivity factors have been taken into account. [19] Spectral fitting [19h] of the XPS N 1s band of PyAzoC4-IM (Figure 1) reveals two chemically different types of N atoms, the signals of which are centered at 399.7 and 401.2 eV and account for the two nitrogen atoms of the azo group and the quaternary pyridine nitrogen atom, respectively.…”

“…25,26,27-Tris(ethoxycarbonylmethoxy)-28-hydroxycalix[4]arene (1) was synthesized according to a published procedure. [16] [18,24] Repeated washes with doubly distilled water followed by vacuum drying were performed just prior to coupling-agent (CA) deposition. All successive substrate treatments were performed in a glove box under a N 2 atmosphere (2 ppm O 2 and 1 ppm H 2 O).…”

“…The recently reported molecular-based structure consists of polypyridyl osmium complexes (1) cross-linked via PdCl 2 (Figure 1). 6 The short linkage ensures a high chromophore density. Formation of this porous metal-organic network involves in-and outward diffusion of PdCl 2 .…”

“…The deposition strategy used had previously resulted in assemblies with roughness values in the range of 0.3-2 nm, with 1-PdCl 2 assemblies being the least rough. [7,8,12,13] The thickness determined from fitting the XRR data is 4.5 nm (Figure 3). Based on the thicknesses of the assembly and template layers (Figure 2) and the length of the oligomers (from DFT calculations, see below), the tilt angle can be approximated as about 208.…”
