Self‐Probing of Micellization within Phenyl‐Containing Surfactant Solutions

Abstract: When the bubble forms: An application of non‐invasive investigation of ionic surfactants based on fluorescence spectroscopy is presented. Relative fluorescence intensities at 305 nm as a function of [sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate] in its aqueous solution is shown in the picture. The breaks in the intensity occur at [SDBS]=CMC.

“…The synergistic effect of ozonation and UV irradiation is particularly pronounced when medium-pressure UV irradiation is applied. A COD reduction of 77% is obtained after 60 min with this [15,16] procedure. Similar results were obtained with SDBS.…”

“…37 However, the uorescence of TX100 is strongly distorted by reabsorption at concentrations at and above the cmc, so that its analysis is questionable. [38][39][40] We use instead the UV-absorbance of TX100, which shows a small but signicant bathochromic (red) shi above the cmc accompanied by the appearance of a pronounced shoulder at the red edge around 285 nm (grey spectra in Fig. 1).…”

“…Aqueous solutions of TX-100 have been studied extensively by a number of methods. Recently, researchers have taken advantage of the fluorescence of TX-100 itself to perform non-invasive cmc determinations. Anand et al reported cmc = 2.24 × 10 –4 mol·L –1 based on their estimate for the break point in the curve describing the change in fluorescence intensity with increasing [TX-100] in aqueous solutions …”

“…As Om et al and Anand et al have pointed out, the use of internal fluorophores to probe micellar systems presents opportunities to study aggregation and micellization processes in a straightforward yet powerful way. We have focused somewhat on the emergence of the redder bands in excitation and emission spectra. These bands are indicative of aggregation, and as such provide a clear marker for phase boundaries delineated by changes in aggregation behavior.…”
