Self-healing Shape-Memory Alloy (SMA) in Reinforced Concrete Structures: A Review

Abstract: The presence of shape-memory alloy (SMA) in civil engineering fields was an eye-opener for researchers to develop better technology which can aid in various related aspects. The superiority of SMA over others is that it has a special capability where it remembers the previous shape and is able to return back to its original shape after being heated. The usage of SMA is tremendous in other applications such as in medical, dentistry, and also in automotive and robotic. However, SMA in structural applications can… Show more

“…And some studies employed calcium nitrate [26][27][28][29][30], sodium nitrite [31], sodium silicate [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39] and silica [40] as healing materials. While other studies investigated effect of other materials on the self-sealing mechanism in different cementation materials, like M-sand material [41], expansive powder [42][43][44], cement with various particle size distributions [45], silica fume [46], fibers [47], LWA [48], and SMA [49], and others use bacteria to fabricate SHC [50][51][52][53][54][55]. Besides, many studies combine some of these techniques [56].…”
