Self-cleaning Ability of a Photocatalyst-containing Denture Base Material

Abstract: This study examined the ability of a photocatalyst mixed in a denture base resin to decompose organic substances which adhered to the denture base resin surface. The photocatalyst was mixed with denture base resin at concentrations of 0, 5, 10, and 15% (w/w). Decomposition test, bending test, and surface roughness measurement were performed at 1, 7, 30, 90, and 180 days after polymerization. Decomposition ability was evaluated based on the residual amount of methylene blue (MB) dissolved in ethanol after UV ir… Show more

“…The best result was shown for chlorhexidine and essential oil-based mouthwash solutions, which may be justified by their potent antimicrobial effects that interfere with cellular permeability and plasma membrane intergrity 15,16,18 . Sousa et al 8 evaluated the effects of the disinfectant solutions chlorhexidine, sodium bicarbonate, vinegar and alkaline peroxide in terms of adherence of C. albicans to heat-activated acrylic resin.…”

“…Chlorhexidne digluconate is an effective wide spectrum antimicrobial, which has a bacteriostatic effect due to its capacity to precipitate and coagulate the microbial cytoplasm via low molecular weight components, such as phosphorus and potassium 15,16 . However, continued use may cause staining and alterations of color in the acrylic 17 .…”

“…One method is to mix TiO 2 with resin. [8][9][10] This approach causes weakening and color change (whitening) of the denture base. A preferable option is to use the TiO 2 coating method.…”

“…maniphalanx dysfunction or rheumatoid arthritis) find oral hygiene (OH) troublesome and require assistance from family or nursing staff 10 . TiO 2 can be incorporated into the resin 11,16,17 to achieve the photocatalytic effect but requires approximately 5wt% TiO 2 , which can weaken the material and cause internal decomposition through its photocatalytic effect. Hygienic denture materials would be invaluable in improving OH in denture wearers.…”

TiO 2 can be incorporated into the resin 11,16,17 to achieve the photocatalytic effect but requires approximately 5wt% TiO 2 , which can weaken the material and cause internal decomposition through its photocatalytic effect. A preferable option is to use TiO 2 -coating method, which does not alter the resin itself.…”
