Self‐Assembling Sub‐Micrometer‐Sized Tube Junctions and Dendrites of Conducting Polymers

Abstract: Sub‐micrometer‐sized tube junctions and dendrites of conducting polyaniline (e.g., see Figure) and polypyrrole have been synthesized through a self‐assembly process for the first time. It is shown that the monomer–dopant micelles act as templates for the self‐assembly of sub‐micrometer‐sized tubes, while the interactions among the polymer chains supply the driving force for micelle aggregation and the formation of junctions and dendrites.

“…[65] A variety of functional dopants, most of them sulfonated, can be used to produce anisotropic nanostructures of PAni. These dopants can also include C 60 -SO 3 H or CNT-SO 3 H. [72,73] These particular dopants have been suggested to form salts with aniline thereby acting as a template for the formation of PAni nanostructures much the same way that surfactant micelles act as templates for mesoporous materials. An interesting group of dopants used for this purpose are amphiphilic azo-benzene sulfonate [74] or C 3 ABSA.…”

“…In addition, obvious aggregation of the MWNTs occurred in acidic conditions in the absence of CSA, in contrast with MWNTs in the presence of CSA alone. This indicates that CSA not only plays both roles of a chiral inducing agent and a dopant, but also serves as a surfactant [11] simultaneously keeping the MWNTs from aggregation.…”

“…Then we consider that the formation of such structure is similar with that of PPy or PANI sub-micrometer-sized tube junctions and dendrites through self-assembly. The micelles can aggregate to form branched structures, which act as templates for sub-micrometer-sized tube junctions and dendrites [21]. Meanwhile, we find this dentritic structure appears to be steady, which keeps the PPy from precipitation.…”
