Self-Assembled Monolayers on Oxidized Metals. 2. Gold Surface Oxidative Pretreatment, Monolayer Properties, and Depression Formation

Abstract: Self-assembly (SA) of organic monolayers onto gold surfaces has been known to be influenced by the surface conditions prior to monolayer adsorption. A new procedure is introduced for obtaining clean, reproducible Au surfaces, appropriate for monolayer self-assembly. The two-step procedure involves (i) exposure of the Au surface to UV/ozone (or O2 plasma) treatment and (ii) immersion in pure ethanol. The organic contaminants present on the (aged) gold surface are oxidized in the first step to volatile products … Show more

“…As discussed in the main paper, we expect that the contamination of the Au surface on the MEMS device with spurious carbon-and oxygen-containing molecules, such as carbon monoxide 3,12 . The discussed evidence for such a molecule can be the formation of a conductance peak below 1 G0, and a shift or shoulder of the peak at 1 G0 as observed elsewhere 13 .…”

“…The development of experimental techniques, such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and mechanically controlled break junction (MCBJ) enabled the formation and manipulation of monoatomic metallic chains 3,4,5 . Using these techniques, charge transport in atomic junctions has been studied intensively 2,3,4,5 , and, more recently, Joule dissipation 9,10 and thermoelectric effects 11,12 have been successfully probed. Recently, heat dissipation was measured in current-carrying single gold-gold contacts by means of STM with an integrated micro thermocouple in the tip 9 .…”

“…A VIA shadow mask was microscopically aligned to the Al gate lines and 60 nm of Au was thermally deposited to pattern the VIAs. The sample (with both gate and VIAs) was then exposed to an oxygen plasma to selectively increase the thickness of the native Al 2 O 3 atop the Al lines, which only grows an unstable oxide atop Au 28,29 . ALD Al 2 O 3 then selectively deposits a high-quality oxide atop the Al, but not atop the Au, which still retains conductivity after ALD, as experimentally verified.…”

“…This is expected to reduce possible gold oxide on the surface and increase the reproducibility of self-assembly processes. 13,14 The as-fabricated devices are then immersed in a 0.1-1 mM solution of the molecules of interest. The immersion time depends on the anchoring groups of the molecule and may range from a few minutes for dithiols to 24 h for dihioacetates for which we employ no deprotection agents.…”
