Selenium, Selenoproteins, and Immunity

Abstract: Selenium is an essential micronutrient that plays a crucial role in development and a wide variety of physiological processes including effect immune responses. The immune system relies on adequate dietary selenium intake and this nutrient exerts its biological effects mostly through its incorporation into selenoproteins. The selenoproteome contains 25 members in humans that exhibit a wide variety of functions. The development of high-throughput omic approaches and novel bioinformatics tools has led to new ins… Show more

“…Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that becomes co‐transiently incorporated into a small number of selenoproteins, as selenocysteine (Sec). Among human selenoproteins, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), thioredoxin reductase (TXNRD), and iodothyronine deiodinase (DIO) represent the best‐characterized selenoenzymes of the antioxidant defense and endocrine systems . Certain selenoproteins have been proven to be essential; that is, GPX4, TXNRD1, TXNRD2, and others are of high pathophysiological relevance because of their anti‐inflammatory and antioxidative properties, which render Se as a central biological micronutrient during the acute phase of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) and inflammation in cardiovascular patients .…”

“…The possible mechanism is that GPx1 protects HIV-infected individuals from the loss of helper T cells by preventing oxidative-induced apoptosis. HIV replication depends on the activation of NF-κB [70].…”

“…The requirements are estimated at 100 μg/kg dry matter and 200 μg/kg for pregnant or lactating women. Generally, the dietary intake of Se ranges from 7 to 499 μg/day, with average values ranging from 40 to 134 μg/day depending on the country [70,76,77]. The reasons for the variability of consumption are related in particular to factors that determine the availability of selenium in the food chain, including soil pH, organic matter content, as well as the presence of ions that can form a complex with Se.…”
