Selenium nanoparticles and quercetin suppress thioacetamide‐induced hepatocellular carcinoma in rats: Attenuation of inflammation involvement

Abstract: The current study investigates the anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects of selenium (Se) formulated as nanoparticles (SeNPs) and in combination with quercetin (QCT) against thioacetamide (TAA)-induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in rats. Seventy-two male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into six groups (n = 12). Three control groups; normal, SeNPs; group received SeNPs only and HCC; group received TAA. In addition, three preventive groups; SeNPs + TAA, QCT + TAA, and QCT + SeNPs + TAA. Induction o… Show more

“…The significant high levels of AFP are usually related to poor differentiation and biologically malignant characteristics especially portal vein invasion of HCC [ 66 , 67 ]. In the current study, serum AFP concentration was significantly elevated in the HCC group as compared to the control group, in agreement with [ 47 , 48 , 57 , 60 ] who reported that AFP concentration was significantly increased in TAA-induced HCC rats. The SV group exhibited lower serum AFP levels ( p < 0.0001), increasing the probability of better prognosis of HCC.…”

“…Additionally, they can be designed for tracking and monitoring purposes and to slow drug release. [ 1–9 ] Polymeric nanocomposites are a new branch of biomaterials that have attracted much attention in pharmacy and medicine. Polymeric nanocomposites may be made of various nanoparticles such as ceramics, metals, metal oxides, and clays scattered in a polymeric matrix.…”

“…[31] Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have received extensive attention due to their excellent biocompatibility, antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer activities, and notable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. [32][33][34][35][36][37] SeNPs triggers intracellular ROS overproduc-tion to induce cell and bacterial apoptosis. Nevertheless, SeNPs have significantly emerged with pro-oxidant and antioxidant potential dependent on subsequent duration, dose, frequency, and oxidation state.…”
