Selenium- and Tellurium-Based Antioxidants for Modulating Inflammation and Effects on Osteoblastic Activity

Abstract: Increased oxidative stress plays a significant role in the etiology of bone diseases. Heightened levels of H2O2 disrupt bone homeostasis, leading to greater bone resorption than bone formation. Organochalcogen compounds could act as free radical trapping agents or glutathione peroxidase mimetics, reducing oxidative stress in inflammatory diseases. In this report, we synthesized and screened a library of organoselenium and organotellurium compounds for hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity, using macrophagic ce… Show more

“…Then, the scavenging ability for oxygen/nitrogen radicals (RONS) in the presence of cells was evaluated in the supernatants using a specific kit (In vitro ROS/RNS assay, Cell Biolabs, Inc., San Diego, CA, USA), and the specimens’ ability to preserve the cell viability was evaluated after inducing oxidative stress for 72 h by means of H 2 O 2 (500 mM, 3 h/d) addition into the medium. 22 Results were statistically analyzed using SPSS v25 software (IBM). Groups were compared using the one-way ANOVA test and Tukey’s posthoc analysis.…”

“…In addition, antioxidant activity was implicated in at least part of the therapeutic properties of organoselenium compounds [39,40]. This effect was further showed in studies performed with cell culture [41][42][43] and animal species such as rats [44,45], fishes [46], Drosophila melanogaster [47], and Caenorhabditis elegans [48].…”
