Selenium and Cadmium Tissue Concentrations and the CASA Sperm Motility Analysis after Administration to Rats

Abstract: The accumulation of Selenium (Se) and Cadmium (Cd) and their effects on sperm motility parameters in rats were investigated. Male rats were dosed with Cd (group A: 2 mg kg −1 b.w., intraperitoneally, group B: 30 mg L −1 , per os in drinking water) and Se (group D: 2 mg kg −1 b.w., intraperitoneally, group E: 5 mg L −1 , per os in drinking water). 36 h after an intraperitoneal (i.p.) and after 90 days of per oral (p.o.) administration of Cd and Se, the samples of liver, kidney, adipose tissue and muscle tissue … Show more

“…Sperm motility is needed for the sperm to reach the cervix and fallopian tubes, and unite with the oocyte. Thus, a decrease in sperm motility is considered an important factor of chemical-induced infertility [ 29 , 35 ]. Sperm morphology development is another important parameter in determining semen quality, and continues into the late stages of spermatogenesis [ 34 ].…”

“…Cu and Zn were determined by a flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) using an ethane-air flame (CAAM-2001N) [ 30 ], while Hg was determined by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS) (Ultima Expert) [ 31 ]. Cd and Cr were measured using an electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometer (ETAAS) (Avio 200) [ 32 ], while As and Se were analysed using the hydride generation method (HGAAS) (AA-6033C) [ 33 ]. The accuracy of the analytical data were ensured by triplicate samples, blank test controls and careful standardization.…”
