Selective Extraction of Rare Earth Elements from Permanent Magnet Scraps with Membrane Solvent Extraction

Abstract: The rare earth elements (REEs) such as neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium were successfully recovered from commercial NdFeB magnets and industrial scrap magnets via membrane assisted solvent extraction (MSX). A hollow fiber membrane system was evaluated to extract REEs in a single step with the feed and strip solutions circulating continuously through the MSX system. The effects of several experimental variables on REE extraction such as flow rate, concentration of REEs in the feed solution, membrane conf… Show more

“…The above proposed mechanism was derived based upon the slope analysis method as explained previously and it was again well supported by the mechanism proposed in the literature review [22][23][24][25][26] . Apart of which the association H + ion and extractant species during complex formation of organo-phosphorous reagents are rational with this study and so as the works reported by researchers for extraction of numerous REEs using these reagents.…”

“…In 2015 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, a process with membrane solvent extraction was conducted comparing the extraction of REEs from a neodymium magnet leachate with Cyanex 923 and TODGA. With TODGA, Nd, Dy, and Pr were selectively recovered with no co-extraction of non-REEs such as Fe and B [10].…”

“…Several studies recently reported the extraction and separation of Ln from transition metals or other Ln species. For instance, a hollow fibre membrane system combined with neutral extractants, such as tetraoctyldiglycolamide, was shown to selectively recover Ln species 4 5 . A metal–organic framework based on homochiral camphorate derivatives, which exhibits ionic radii selective crystallization, was applied to separate light and heavy Ln 3+ (ref.…”
