Ab stractThe ef fect of two sub strates dif fer ing in the amount of toxic met als and nu tri ents on the con tent of vol a tile or ganic compounds in roots of Pinus sylvestris seed lings in oc u lated with Paxillus involutus, Laccaria laccata, Suillus luteus and a strain of the ectendomycorrhizal fun gus Mrg X (Ascomycotina) in pot ex per i ment was in ves ti gated. Vol a tile com pounds extracted with a super criti cal fluid ex trac tion were pri mar ily terpenes and sesquiterpenes, and they were qual i ta tively the same in roots of mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plants grown on both sub strates. The ma jor monoterpenes were α-pinene, ∆ 3 -carene and ß-pinene. On the un pol luted sub strate, in oc u lation of plants with the fungi re sulted in a sim i lar amount of the volatiles, while on the pol luted sub strate the mycorrhizal roots showed sig nif i cantly lower con tent of terpenoids than nonmycorrhizal roots. The mycorrhizal fungi showed dif ferent ef fects on the con cen tra tions of sev eral terpenoids on both sub strates.
