Abstract. Propagules of the mangrove, Rhizophora mangle L., were precultivated for 9 months in a greenhouse. The young plants were transferred into unaerated nutrient solutions without and with 200 mol m 3 NaCl and subsequently their growth, their water relations and the photosynthetic properties of their leaves were studied. Growth of the salttreated plants was significantly increased, while the control plants gradually died off after finishing the experiments. The shoot water potential and the stomatal resistance of the leaves were lowered while the chlorophyll contents and the chlorophyll a/b ratio in the leaves of salt‐treated plants were increased by NaCl, the net result being an enhanced rate of CO2 assimilation. The leaves of both sets of plants showed diurnal fluctuations in malic acid concentration which were more pronounced in the leaves of salt treated plants which, additionally, were more succulent. However, the plants showed no net CO2 fixation at night, indicating that Rhizophora mangle is a CAM‐cycling plant. After 200 d of cultivation without or with NaCl, the Na+, Cl and K+ concentrations in tissues and vacuoles were measured. Energy‐dispersive X‐ray microprobe analyses on root vacuoles of control plants reveal Na+ preference, on those of salt treated plants a strong K+ preference. Vacuolar K+ concentrations are neither affected by NaCl nor do they vary across the root radius. High vacuolar Na+ and Cl concentrations are found in the hypodermis followed by a stepwise decrease towards the inner root cortex cells. Ion concentrations of the photosynthetically active leaf tissues seem to be regulated by (1) radial filtration across the root cortex: (2) ion exchange of the xlem parenchyma cells: and (3) sequestration of Na+ and Cl in the hypodermal water storage tissue of the leaves.
The production of enzymes involved in mycoparasitism by several strains of ectomycorrhizal fungi: Amanita muscaria (16-3), Laccaria laccata (9-12), L. laccata (9-1), Suillus bovinus (15-4), S. bovinus (15-3), S. luteus (14-7) on different substrates such as colloidal chitin, mycelia of Trichoderma harzianum, T. virens and Mucor hiemalis was examined. Chitinases and beta-1,3-glucanases were assayed spectrophotometrically by measuring the amount of reducing sugars releasing from suitable substrate by means of Miller's method. Beta-glucosidases were determined by measuring the amount of p-nitrophenol released from p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside. It was observed that A. muscaria (16-3) and L. laccata (9-12) biosynthesized the highest activity of enzymes in contrast to the strains of S. bovinus and S. luteus. The mycelium of T. harzianum turned out to be the best substrate for the induction of beta-1,3-glucanases and beta-glucosidases for both strains of L. laccata, although the difference in the induction of chitinases in the presence of mycelia of different species of Trichoderma was not indicated.
Interactions between the ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria laccata and the soil fungus Trichoderma virens in co-culture and in the rhizosphere of Pinus sylvestris seedlings growing in vitro were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. The growth of T. virens was inhibited in co-culture. Shortened, more branched and sometimes deformed or injured hyphae of T. virens were observed in the zone of inhibition. Two-month-old mycorrhizae of P. sylvestris/ L. laccata were inoculated with a conidial suspension of T. virens and examined at intervals of 7-24 h and 2, 3, and 6 days post-inoculation (p.i.). On non-mycorrhizal roots, conidia germination was high and long hyphae formed 3 days p.i. On mycorrhizal roots, short germ tubes were observed only sporadically. At 3 days p.i., the mantle hyphae of L. laccata grew towards the conidia and coiled around them. Extremely dense coils of hyphae were found around clusters of conidia. Deformation of conidia, breaks in conidial walls and their partial degradation were observed 6 days p.i.
The growth rate and the behaviour of Laccaria laccata and Trichoderma harzianum hyphae in co-culture and in the rhizosphere of 3-month-old Pinus sylvestris seedlings grown in vitro were investigated. In the interaction zone, hyphae of L. laccata became more pigmented and formed short branches growing towards the hyphae of the saprobic fungus, coiled around them and penetrated sporadically. Vacuolated hyphae of T. harzianum showed protoplasm granulation and breaks in walls followed by release of protoplasts. In the rhizosphere, the mantle hyphae of L. laccata showed a tendency to surround conidia of T. harzianum. No obvious penetration of the conidial walls by the hyphae of the mycorrhizal fungus was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Instead, in rare cases, the hyphae of L. laccata showed marked wrinkles, and a partial degradation of a mucilaginous material covering the mantle appeared to occur.
Specimens of Heterobasidion annosum were collected in 104 different stands in 43 regions of Poland. Pure cultures originating from 439 collections were identified in mating tests. Three intersterility groups, P, S and F, of H. annosum were found. Their occurrence in Poland was connected with the natural distribution of the main hosts: Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies and Abies alba, respectively. P was the most common intersterility group of H. annosum in Poland, causing mortality in Scots pine plantations and root rot in older stands. It was also isolated from Betula pendula, P. abies, Larix decidua, Fagus sylvatica and Carpinus betulus. The S group was present in the southern and northeastern parts of the country, causing root and butt rot mostly in spruce stands. The F group occurred in the south of Poland, in the mountains, highlands and lowland up to the northern border of the distribution of fir. It was found only on stumps, old dead trees and logs. There was no evidence of damage caused by the F group on A. alba trees.
The effect of Paxillus involutus, Laccaria laccata, Suillus luteus, S. bovinus, Hebeloma crustuliniforme and a strain of the ectendomycorrhizal fungus Mrg X (Ascomycotina) on the content of volatile organic compounds in roots of Pinus sylvestris seedlings grown in vitro was investigated. Volatile compounds extracted with a supercritical fluid extraction were primarily terpenes and sesquiterpenes and qualitatively were the same in roots of mycorrhizal and nonm~corrhizal plants. The major monoterpenes were ct-pinene, A -carene and 13-pinene. Inoculation of plants with the fungi resulted in statistically non--significant increases in the total amount of the volatiles. The mycorrhizal fungi showed diversified effect on the concentrations of several terpenoids.
