“…2. The following approaches were investigated in the included works: haemodialysis (HD) [21, 22, 31–65]; haemofiltration (HF) [66, 67]; dilution techniques, membranes or haemofiltrate‐reinfusion (HFR) in haemodiafiltration (HDF) [68–83]; continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) [84–87]; effects of various adsorbing, displacing or metabolically active supplements (e.g. AST‐120 (Kremezin®), ibuprofen or folates) in different dialysis techniques [18, 23–2988–91]; and comparisons of two or more different techniques between each other (Fig.…”

“…Moreover, during treatment with HFR the protein expression of HO-1 over time increased (p< 0.00001) and it approached the statistical significance versus time zero at six months (0.27±0.10 vs. 0.17± 0.11, P = 0.0527) and became significantly different from time zero at 9 (0.48 ±0. 20 Splendiani et al [56] have shown that the styrenic resin HFR cartridge is able to adsorb significant amounts of homocysteine without simultaneous adsorption of vit. B12 and folate: this suggests an important mechanism for reducing cardiovascular risk.…”

“…Prognosis in patients with KS limited to the skin is favorable while visceral involvement is associated with high mortality. Giorgio Splendiani et al (112) of the University Hospital Tor Vergata (Rome, Italy) investigated the effects of double chamber HDF with reinfusion of ultrafiltrate regenerated through a charcoal‐resin cartridge on the homocysteine (Hcy) levels in 10 patients. The data, which need confirmation in a long‐term study, seem to indicate that this technique is able to reduce Hcy levels not only through a likely reduction of uremic toxins, but also through an actual removal of Hcy by adsorbance onto the charcoal‐resin cartridge.…”
