Selection responses in duration of fertility and its consequences on hatchability in the intergeneric crossbreeding of ducks

Abstract: 1. From 1992 to 2003, selected (S) and control lines (C) of the laying Brown Tsaiya duck (Anas platyrhynchos) were simultaneously maintained under the same standardised conditions of feeding and management. 2. The selection objective was to increase the number of fertile eggs after a single artificial insemination (AI) with pooled Muscovy semen. From generations G1 to G11, 2452 and 2022 female ducks, in S and C lines, respectively, were measured and recorded. In the S line, the percentage selected varied betwe… Show more

“…They were the 10 th generation of selection breeding from 12 sires and 50 dams. The procedures of the selection experiment for the duration of fertility were described by Cheng et al (2002Cheng et al ( , 2005. The phenotype traits, consisting of the egg weight at 30 weeks of age (EW30), egg weight at 40 weeks of age (EW40), number of eggs to 40 weeks of age (EN40), hatchability rate (HR), fertility rate (FR) and maximum duration of fertility (MDF), were used for marker-trait association analysis.…”

“…The four populations were close and compact as a group that far from other populations in 3D PCA. It's perhaps all BI, BII, and BIII were derived from GBT and all were selected by only one trait, moreover their separation was not for long time, the selective programs began at 1984, 1992, and 1996 respectively [6,8,9]. Such low diversity between populations and each population would breed for a breed, the monitoring and analyzing system should be high definition.…”

“…This high egg production line was namely Brown Tsaiya LRI 1 (BI) (Figure 1B). The second line of LRI's Brown Tsaiya, that is, the Brown Tsaiya LRI 2 (BII) ( Figure 1C), originated from the fifth generation of BI and was selected to increase the number of fertile eggs after a single artificial insemination with pooled Muscovy semen since 1992 [8]. In 1996, LRI started to select the color of the egg shell from the eighth generation of BI and established a Brown Tsaiya line with blue egg shells which Taiwan people favor, called Brown Tsaiya LRI 3 (BIII) ( Figure 1D) [5,9].…”

“…Animals and DNA preparation A total of 133 control lines (CL) with no selection and 184 duration of fertility selected line (SL) of Brown Tsaiya ducks, obtained from the LRI-COA experimental farm in Hsinhua, Tainan, were employed in this study. The detailed schedule of the selection experiment and standardized conditions of feeding and management for these lines is described in the study by Cheng et al (2005). Table 1 summarizes the least-squares means (LSM) and standard error (SE) of the phenotypic traits analysed in this study.…”
