“…However, the role of CD133 expression as a prognostic marker in NSCLC has been debated (46)(47)(48)(49)(50)(51). CD133 has been found to be significantly correlated with pathological stages II-IV in NSCLC and was an independent poor factor for prognosis (49) however, Salnikov et al (51) reported CD133 may be used as a predictor for efficacy of cytotoxic therapy, but it does not represent a prognostic marker for positive in NSCLC.…”

“…With respect to the described functional role of the PI3K/Akt pathway in CSCs [129,143] and the role of cancer stem cells in radiotherapy outcomes [135], inhibition of the Akt pathway might offer an improved response to radiation in CSCs [137,141,144]. Based on the assumption that CSCs are more radioresistant and that they present Akt pathway hyperactivation, our laboratory has shown that a selected radioresistant subpopulations of NSCLC-A549 cells that present the CSC marker ALDH1 can be radiosensitized by the PI3K inhibitor LY294002 [145]. The importance of PI3K/Akt signaling to radioresistance in CSCs is also underlined by data indicating the Akt-dependence of accelerated repair of radiation-induced DNA-DSB [141], especially in brain tumor stem cell [146].…”

“…Since ALDH1-positive CSCs are thought to be resistant to chemotherapy [7] and radiation therapy [24], it was speculated that recurrence after breast-conserving treatment might be higher for ALDH1-positive than for ALDH1-negative DCIS. However, we found that, although admittedly the number of patients in either group was small, the recurrence rates were very low and similar for both tumors.…”
