Selection of experimental strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) hybrids based on selection indices

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Dutch.), is the only vegetable belonging to the rosacea family. All strawberry species have now emerged from wild species and belong to the genus Fragaria, being that this genus presents more than 45 described species, and only 11 are considered natural species. Due to the octoploid nature of strawberry and its variability after hybridization, selecting one or more characters may result in unfavorable genotypes and even the exclusion of promising ones, because nega… Show more

“…High variability was observed among the assessed hybrids, with AMCF being the only trait that did not significantly differ between hybrids. These results are different from those that were found by Galvão et al [12] and Vieira et al [11], who assessed strawberry hybrids and found significant differences for all of the traits related to yield. No differences were found for soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH, and anthocyanins.…”

“…Yield traits also presented the highest heritability values (Table 2), corroborating the results of Vieira et al [11,30], who assessed strawberry hybrids and found values above 80% for NCF and TFM. In contrast, the authors found heritability below 60% for SS/TA ratio and TP and higher values for SS (60.17 and 67%, respectively).…”

“…a fruit crop that belongs to the family Rosaeceae and the genus Fragaria, presenting 35 described and 11 natural species. In Brazil, seven cultivars and 103 hybrids of strawberry were evaluated for fruit mass and commercial fruit value for selections in crop's breeding programs (Vieira et al, 2017). With the provision of advanced genetic engineering tools for development of populations with improved traits of economic value, it is important to estimate genetic parameters for the application of appropriate selection methods and greater genetic gains.…”

“…Axillary buds at the top of the crown produce new crowns or stolons or remain dormant, depending on environmental conditions. Productivity is related to the production of new crowns, leaves and inflorescences, and varies with the cultivar, irrigation, fertilizing and environment [5,6]. Low yields can be related to poor leaf or flower initiation or poor fruit set.…”
