The selection of superior strawberry genotypes is a complex process due to the high variability after hybridization that is caused by the octoploid nature and the heterozygosis, making the selection of multiple traits difficult. This study aimed to select strawberry hybrids with the potential for fresh consumption and/or processing by applying multivariate analysis to obtain traits of interest simultaneously. Hybrids were obtained from the crossing among seven commercial cultivars, defining a selection of 10% of them. The experimental design consisted of an augmented block design, with two commercial cultivars, Camarosa and Camino Real, as the controls. Different variables, including the number and average mass of commercial fruits, total fruit mass, pH, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, reducing sugars, pectin, ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, and anthocyanin’s, were assessed. The selection of hybrids was based on the Mulamba and Mock rank-summation index, principal component analysis, and Ward’s hierarchical cluster analysis. The selection index was based on different weights being adopted for fresh market and processing. The assessed traits had high variability between hybrids. The highest selection gains were obtained for production traits, but the different weight assignment resulted in different classifications of hybrids for both fresh consumption and processing. Most of the hybrids selected by the index remained in the same group in the principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses, which indicates that multivariate analysis is a valuable tool for assisting in the selection of superior hybrids in the strawberry crop.

The most efficient breeding strategies in crop improvement is the selection based on heritability and combing ability estimates for the traits of economic importance or commercial value. Therefore, the present study was to obtain estimates of heritability and to estimate the phenotypic and genotypic correlations among the characteristics of interest. The commercial cultivars ‘Aromas’, ‘Camarosa’, ‘Dover’, ‘Festival Flórida’, ‘Oso Grande’, ‘Sweet Charlie’ and ‘Milsei-Tudla’, and 103 F1 hybrids from the crossbreeding experiments were evaluated for four traits of commercial fruit yield and 13 traits of fruit physical and chemical quality. The estimated genetic parameters were general combining ability, specific combining ability, genotypic correlation among traits, estimates of heritability, genetic and phenotypic variance. The ‘Camarosa’ and ‘Aromas’ cultivars were the most promising cultivars for use as parents in the commercial fruit production, while ‘Dover’ and ‘Sweet Charlie’ cultivars were selected for taste of fruit in strawberry breeding, as they showed higher concentrations of favorable alleles in the F1 hybrid population. It was also verified some strong genetic correlations for some pairs of characteristics in the present study that may allow indirect selection. The estimation of these parameters is an important basis for decision making on the genetic engineering of strawberry.

No Evidence of Excessive Leaf Production by Strawberries Grown in the Subtropics

Fruit growth in most plants is strongly dependent on photosynthates produced in the leaves. However, if there are too many leaves, the lower part of the canopy becomes heavily shaded and yields are reduced. Experiments were conducted to determine if cultivars of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) grown in Queensland, Australia have excessive leaf production for adequate cropping. Seven cultivars and breeding lines were planted from March to May from 2004 to 2016 and the number of fully-expanded leaves, dry weight of the flowers and fruit, and yield/plant recorded (n = 23). Information was collected on daily maximum and minimum temperatures and solar radiation. Increases in the number of leaves/plant over the season followed a linear pattern (range in R2 from 0.81–0.99), with the relationship generally similar or better than a dose-logistic (sigmoid) function (range in R2 from 0.79–0.99). There were strong linear relationships between the number of leaves/plant and growing degree-days (GDDs), using a base temperature of 7 °C (range in R2 from 0.81–0.99). In contrast, there was no relationship between the number of leaves/plant produced each day and average season daily mean temperature (15.7 °C to 17.8 °C) or radiation (13.0 to 15.9 MJ/m2/day) (R2 < 0.10). Potential yield as indicated by the dry weight of the flowers and immature fruit/plant increased up to 40 to 45 leaves/plant (R2 = 0.49 or 0.50) suggesting that the cultivars do not have excessive leaf production. There was no relationship between yield and the number of leaves/plant (R2 < 0.10) because rain before harvest damaged the fruit in some years. These results suggest that the development of new cultivars with more leaves/plant might increase cropping of strawberries growing in the subtropics.
