“…Twenty-seven trees, out of 244, are estimated at 1, there is no pellicle intrusion. The same quality can be ascribed to the fruits of five selected types from Sinop vicinity in Turkey (Serdar 1999). Serdar and Soylu (1999) report about five trees from the area of Samsun vicinity which lack the pellicle intrusion, one tree exhibits 1 mm penetration of episperm into the embryo, and in another type the intrusion is 1-3 mm.…”

“…The two colours that also appear but are rarer are light brown and reddish brown (Botu et al 1999). Serdar (1999) and Serdar and Soylu (1999) report that the local types from Sinop and Samsun vicinities in Turkey have only brown or smoothly dark brown fruits.…”

“…Ertan et al (2007) reported nut weight of 5 selected European chestnut genotypes higher than 15 g in Aegean region in Turkey. Serdar and Bilgener (1995) found nut weight of selected chestnut genotypes in Samsun and Sinop province (Black Sea Region in Turkey) varied from 11.7 to 15.1 g and 9.97 to 10.10 g. Serdar (2002) selected 13 new chestnut genotypes in Camili vicinity of Northeastern part of Turkey and average nut weight and kernel weight varied between 4.79 to 7.45 and 4.04 to 6.13 g respectively. In our study, the genotype IY42 found the most promising for earliness and nut weight (6.62 g) indicate higher nut weight than previously selected early-fruiting chestnut selections in Turkey (Ayfer and Soylu 1995;Akca and Yilmaz 1999).…”

“…Anatolia is one of the places chestnuts originated and were first cultivated (Soylu, 2004). The first scientific selection studies on the chestnut started in 1975 in the Marmara region, while other regions later followed with selection studies at different institutes (Ayfer et al, 1977;Ozkarakas et al, 1995;Serdar, 1999;Serdar and Soylu, 1999;Serdar, 2002;Ertan et al, 2007;Koyuncu et al, 2008). Some isozyme studies on the European chestnut indicate that Turkey has a range of potential of chestnut genotypes and is considered to have different subspecies of C. sativa Mill.…”
