Selection indices to identify drought-tolerant grain sorghum cultivars

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Twenty-five cultivars of grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] were examined under both drought stress and normal conditions in 4 experiments. In each condition, genotypes were evaluated in a factorial experiment using a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Eight drought tolerance indices including stability tolerance index, mean productivity (MP), geometric MP, harmonic mean, stress susceptibility index, tolerance index, yield index, and yield stability index were estimated fo… Show more

“…In the sensitive group the genotypes had high SSI values, demonstrating their susceptibility to salt and aptness only under normal conditions (Ashraf et al, 2015;Menezes et al, 2014). The results obtained through cluster analysis were confirmed by three-dimensional plots and Principle component analysis, which shows that the models describe the clustering data very well.…”

“…Manjarrez-Sandoval et al (1989) found that drought stress during anthesis caused a 31% reduction in grain number per head while grain size remained constant, so the loss in grain yield per panicle was about 36%. Menezes et al (2014) found that drought stress significantly affected the yield of sorghum lines, causing a reduction of 43% compared to the full-irrigation condition.…”

“…Genotypes Identification for water stress tolerance at grain filling stage for higher production is very necessary for crop breeding (Menezes et al, 2014). Various previous investigations revealed that, the advantage of these indices for classified genotypes with more stable of productivity under water-limited conditions (Golabadi et al, 2006).…”
