Selected antioxidant properties of alfalfa, radish, and white mustard sprouts biofortified with selenium

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of application of two mineral selenium forms (selenite Se4+ or selenate Se6+) on the accumulation of this element by alfalfa (<em>Medicago sativa</em>), radish (<em>Raphanus sativus</em> var. <em>sativus</em>), and white mustard (<em>Sinapis alba</em>) at early stages of plant development for biofortification of sprouts with selenium, and the impact of this process on s… Show more

“…In the present study, we showed that the increased concentration of anthocyanin in the purple-grained wheat cultivar was more effective by foliar application of Se than by soil application of Se ( Figure 6A). Similar results are obtained by Woch and Hawrylak-Nowak (2019) in alfalfa, radish, and white mustard sprouts applied with Se. In addition, we showed that the levels of total protein and total free amino acids were positively correlated with the anthocyanin concentrations in the grain of the purple-grained wheat cultivar ( Figures 6B, C), but the dry weight of grain was not.…”

“…These results are in agreement with the Se beneficial effect on ascorbic acid biosynthesis recorded in shallot [36] and broccoli sprouts [37]. Differently, no beneficial effect of Se on AA accumulation was recorded in mature broccoli [9], Indian mustard [19] and sprouts of alfalfa, radish and white mustard sprouts [38]. From the present research a significant Se beneficial effect on AA biosynthesis in kohlrabi arose, which is characteristic of this species with a decreasing intensity from Sonata F 1 to Dobrynya F 1 to White Vienna 1390.…”

“…Table 2 displays the data collected. Studies on the antioxidant properties of white radish have been published from a variety of countries, including Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Poland, and Romania (Bors et al, 2015;Somman and Siwarungson, 2015;Woch and Hawrylak-Nowak, 2019;Noman et al, 2021). For the first time, the TAS, TOS, and OSI values of white radish tuber and aerial sections were determined in this research.…”
