Sorghum is a versatile crop used for energy production, human and animal feedings, and raw material for industry. The grain sorghum is the fifth most important cereal worldwide, and Brazil is one of the top 10 sorghum producers. In the last 40 years, the sorghum grain yield in Brazil has increased to 32.70 kg ha-1 year -1. Although this clear evolution, much remains to be done, and sorghum breeders in Brazil still face several challenges. This review discusses the main characteristics of sorghum genetics and breeding, aiming for sorghum improvement for food, fodder, feed, and fuel uses. Herein will be highlighted essential topics related to the genetic control of the main interest traits; conventional sorghum breeding; the development of sorghum lines and hybrids; the use of male-sterility in sorghum breeding; the implication of genotypes-by-environments interaction in sorghum, the use of genome-wide association studies, and genomic prediction to maximize the efficiency of the sorghum breeding programs.

The objective of this work was to estimate and compare phenotypic and genetic parameters after three cycles of intrapopulation recurrent selection for fresh corn grown under three nutrient availability conditions. Three experiments derived from the same population (MV-003) were conducted to assess the ability of progenies to absorb nutrients, one under adequate fertilization (control; MV-006), one under low nitrogen availability (N; MV-006N), and one under low phosphorus availability (P; MV-006P). The experiments were carried out in randomized blocks, with 64 half-sib progenies and three replications for each nutritional condition. Chlorophyll index, plant height, ear insertion, ear diameter, ear length, unhusked ear yield, and marketable husked ear were evaluated. The populations showed variability for the three nutrient availability conditions. The variability reduced after only three selection cycles; thus, evaluating a higher number of half-sib progenies, above 64, under low N and P availability is indicated. The rates used to identify the most efficient progenies in breeding programs should be close to the appropriate one, with a slow reduction after the selection cycles. The variability will be thus maintained, with a greater possibility of identifying more promising progenies. In addition, the frequency of favorable alleles increases more gradually and effectively. The N and P rate of 60 kg ha-1 is not indicated as a critical level for the initial phase of the program.

Sorghum is a crop already established for off season planting, in succession to soybeans in the Southeast, Midwest and also in some areas of Northeast in Brazil. Studying new cultivars is necessary for the sorghum development in the country. Therefore, this study evaluated the productive performance of sorghum in different sowing dates and determined the SPAD chlorophyll index, correlating it with macronutrient contents in hybrids in different development stages and sowing dates. Experiments were conducted in contiguous areas in four sowing dates, the first one was sown on February 26 2013 and the others at 17, 30 and 41 days after the first sowing -(DAFS). The experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with nine hybrids and four replications. Each sowing date was considered an individual experiment, and grouped analysis was done to compare characteristics. Macronutrients and indexes content data of Soil Plant Analytical Division value (SPAD) were evaluated at three different stages within the plant cycle, characterizing an experiment in split plot (development stages -subplots), with the factor in the plot (hybrid x sowing time). Pearson's correlation coefficients for the variables macronutrient and SPAD index were calculated. Production performance of sorghum hybrids varied according to sowing dates. Macronutrient content of sorghum hybrids varied in different development stages evaluated and sowing dates. SPAD chlorophyll index values have positive linear correlations with nitrogen content in the analyzed phenological stages.
