Seismology education and public-outreach resources for a spectrum of audiences, as provided by the IRIS Consortium

Abstract: The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology's (IRIS) Education and Public Outreach (EPO) program is committed to advancing awareness and understanding of seismology and geophysics while also inspiring careers in the earth sciences. To achieve this mission, the IRIS EPO program combines the content expertise of the consortium membership with the educational and outreach expertise of IRIS staff members to create programs, products, and services that target a range of audiences, including students and t… Show more

“…Thus, the use of seismic data was just one component of their seismology-related teaching. Many of the resources are available via the IRIS Education and Public Outreach Program (www.iris.edu/earthquake; Taber et al, 2015), but the superusers also used other resources, and in one case even included students in the collection of felt reports from the community. The grade-level of implementation was more varied than we expected, stretching from 4th grade to 10th grade.…”

“…To accelerate the development of this new Seismology Skill Building Workshop (SSBW) and increase chances for success, the workshop was built upon the foundation of existing introductory, tutorial-based, active e-learning materials (Sit and Brudzinski, 2017). These materials had been used to deliver introductory training on Linux, shell scripting, Generic Mapping Tools (GMT), and Seismic Analysis Code (SAC) as part of the USArray Short Course, an intense week-long workshop primarily for graduate students from 2009 to 2017 (IRIS, 2020), and they currently serve as part of the orientation for IRIS's internship program (Taber et al, 2015).…”
