Seismo‐Tectonic Model for the Southern Pre‐Rif Border (Northern Morocco): Insights From Morphochronology

Abstract: In intraplate tectonic regions characterized by moderate seismic activity, the recognition of active zones of deformation has long been a challenging task (e.g., Landgraf et al., 2017). Like Northern Africa, such regions are generally characterized by low hazard but high risk due to the concentrations highly vulnerable population and/or infrastructures (Moreno et al., 2004). Moreover, when low strain rates are combined with meteorological and anthropogenic overprints, the geomorphic signatures associated with … Show more

“…This domain is partially covered by undeformed Mesozoic and Eocene marine sedimentary rocks (e.g., Phosphatic series; Salvan, 1954;El Kiram et al, 2019;El Attmani et al, 2021). The Rif Mountains to the north reaches peaks of up to 2500 m and represents a fold and thrust belt that experienced NW-SE shortening due to the convergence of Africa and Eurasia (Jolivet and Faccenna, 2000;Abbassi et al, 2020;Agharroud et al, 2021). There, contractional deformation migrated southward until 8 Ma when the outermost tectonic units where emplaced onto the South Rifian Corridor (Krijgsman et al, 1999;Capella et al, 2018;Abbassi et al, 2020;.…”

“…Landform formation on the surface of the earth is determined by various factors including rock topography, the climate in this case rainfall, temperature and humidity, vegetation, organisms, and time [10]. The aspect of morphoassociation in the research area cannot be separated from the factors that have been mentioned, because the research area has a flat to steep topography, the constituent rocks are young volcanic rocks whose characteristics are unconsolidated rocks which are less compact due to their loose nature, also the study area has high rainfall so that in the Schmidt and Fergusson classification the climate is wet which is also related to temperature and humidity [11], then the condition of the vegetation in the research area from the density level varies because based on the land use map there are dry fields, mixed forests, and similar forests, and organism factors related to humans with human activities in the research area apart from being a settlement, there are also economic activities such as motels, fruit selling activities, restaurants, and light snacks [12].…”

“…Morocco faces a persistent threat from the ongoing movements along the northwestern boundary of the African plate and the Eurasian plate, owing to its geographical positioning 6 a network of seismic and accelerograph stations has been established, currently totaling 35 stations. Integrating earthquake preparedness sessions into the school curriculum and increasing public awareness are particularly beneficial endeavors.…”
