Seismicity of Czorsztyn Lake Region: A Case of Reservoir Triggered Seismic Process?

Abstract: Czorsztyn Lake is an artificial water reservoir backed up by the hydropower plant Niedzica earth dam on Dunajec River in south Poland. Its filling began in 1995 and ended in 1997. The reservoir of 234.5 million m 3 capacity is shallow, between 20 to 50 m of water column, on average. Until 2011 the seismic activity in this region was sparse, some 1 event trimonthly. However, in November 2011 more than 60 events occurred. Such bursts of activity, separated by low activity periods, continue to appear. Since Augus… Show more

“…At least some of the faults were still active during the Quaternary (Baumgart-Kotarba 1996, 2001, Zuchiewicz et al 2002. The seismic data of local earthquakes recorded in the Podhale-PKB region supplied the evidence that tectonic faults in this area are still seismically active (Guterch et al 2005, Białoń et al 2015. Recent vertical movements in the area are estimated at up to + 0.5 mm per year (Vanko 1988, Vass 1998.…”

“…The most accurate values of the non-DC components were obtained from the P-wave amplitude inversion (Fojtikowa et al 2010). The work of Białoń et al (2015) and the catalog of MT solutions of the events from the Czorsztyn Lake area (IS-EPOS 2016) show that the amplitude inversion of first P-wave pulses may also be a robust tool in case of surface network recordings. Even having in mind the limitations of the method the obtained results seem to be a good first approximation of the full MT.…”

“…Niedzica dam is located at the eastern border of Orawa-Nowy Targ Basin, which is (Guterch et al 2005;Plesiewicz and Wiszniowski 2015). The seismicity of the area is considered as the triggered seismicity with delayed response (Białoń et al 2015). Currently, there are over 150 events located in this area with M L from -0.6 to 2.4.…”

“…The seismicity is considered as a response to fault weakening due to diffusion effects. The earthquake triggering in this region would indicate the existence of a fault or fault system being close to failure (Białoń et al 2015). Location and moment tensor are crucial in the investigation of the origins of seismogenic process related to industrial operations such as artificial reservoir exploitation.…”
