Coupled Piled Raft Foundations (CPRFs) are broadly applied to share heavy loads of superstructures between piles and rafts and reduce total and differential settlements. Settlements induced by static/coupled static-dynamic loads are one of the main concerns of engineers in designing CPRFs. Evaluation of induced settlements of CPRFs has been commonly carried out using threedimensional finite element/finite difference modeling or through expensive real-scale/prototype model tests. Since the analyses, especially in the case of coupled static-dynamic loads, are not simply conducted, this paper presents two practical methods to gain the values of settlement. First, different nonlinear finite difference models under different static and coupled static-dynamic loads are developed to calculate exerted settlements. Analyses are performed with respect to different axial loads and pile's configurations, numbers, lengths, diameters, and spacing for both loading cases. Based on the results of well-validated three-dimensional finite difference modeling, artificial neural networks and evolutionary polynomial regressions are then applied and introduced as capable methods to accurately present both static and coupled static-dynamic settlements. Also, using a sensitivity analysis based on Cosine Amplitude Method, axial load is introduced as the most influential parameter, while the ratio l/d is reported as the least effective parameter on the settlements of CPRFs.

Liquefaction Potential of Saturated Sand Reinforced by Cement-Grouted Micropiles: An Evolutionary Approach Based on Shaking Table Tests

Cement-grouted injections are increasingly employed as a countermeasure material against liquefaction in active seismic areas; however, there is no methodology to thoroughly and directly evaluate the liquefaction potential of saturated sand materials reinforced by the cement grout-injected micropiles. To this end, first, a series of 1 g shaking table model tests are conducted. Time histories of pore water pressures, excess pore water pressure ratios (ru), and the number of required cycles (Npeak) to liquefy the soil are obtained and modified lower and upper boundaries are suggested for the potential of liquefaction of both pure and grout-reinforced sand. Next, adopting genetic programming and the least square method in the framework of the evolutionary polynomial regression technique, high-accuracy predictive equations are developed for the estimation of rumax. Based on the results of a three-dimensional, graphical, multiple-variable parametric (MVP) analysis, and introducing the concept of the critical, boundary inclination angle, the inclination of micropiles is shown to be more effective in view of liquefaction resistivity for loose sands. Due to a lower critical boundary inclination angle, the applicability range for inclining micropiles is narrower for the medium-dense sands. MVP analyses show that the effects of a decreasing spacing ratio on decreasing rumax are amplified while micropiles are inclined.

This study presents the numerical simulation of flexible wall barrel soil-pile-structure interaction analysis. Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) is usually assumed beneficial during an earthquake. However, SSI can also increase permanent deformation and decrease the stiffness of the pile foundation system which affects seismic response and displacement in the overall structure, especially high-rise buildings. Non-linear 3D FEM models with a gap/slap mechanism have been developed in ABAQUS to simulate the effect of soil-pile-structure interaction (SPSI). The objectives of this research are to study the effect of SPSI on soil response, kinematic properties of the superstructure, and the modeling of SPSI problem with the superstructure, and to increase horizontal stiffness of foundation system by using the cement-mixing method. The analyses in this study include superstructure analysis with fix-based, SPSI, and SPSI with cement-mixing. The constitutive models in this study are Mohr-Coulomb for soil material and Linear-elastic for the upper structure. The calibration of the flexible wall barrel modeling technique was successfully calibrated with a shaking table reference case with some variation of the results. It is observed that SPSI provides flexibility and damping to the superstructure. The gap/slap mechanism is clearly observed on the contact surfaces between soil and superstructure at a shallow level. Cement-mixing soil improvement increases horizontal stiffness resulting in a stiffer response of superstructure and reduction of pile stress during earthquakes. The influence of SPSI on superstructure and comparisons between simulation cases are then discussed. However, this study does not consider consolidation and the contraction properties have been simplified.
